Some restore partitions don't require anything but being booted to the OS, but others not true. In the first case, I am not sure if one can do a restore by booting to just any old DVD/CD--e.g., an XP CD. And, his restore partition may be a goner if he can't currently boot. Bad news, bad service, bad system, bad luck.

I would insist on returning the machine for full credit and bypass the whole issue for now and forever. You, canadianbacon, have been dealt a hand that you should not have been dealt. Sorry for the unfortunate circumstances, and welcome regardless, of course.
