Many pirated versions have this disabled by (THERE DEFAULT)
you might try to correct by this:
Control panel (set to classic view)
Administration tools
computer management
services and applications
services
SSPD set to automatic- this is for Network Discovery.
Reboot after setting.. then check to see if it is still GREYED out.

The MS site recommends you use "Repair" via the DVD disk to insure your install was correct.
