The reason you were able to get it up and running after installing ubuntu is because the ubuntu bootmanager (grub) can detect bootmanagers on other drives and so allows you to select your operating systems from the boot partition of one drive.

You did not need to install ubuntu to get vista to work, you simply had to redirect your bios to be to the correct harddrive.
