You could try your backup, but there's a posibility that the issue is present within the backup as well; it would depend of when the issue began. You could also try Znod's suggestion, but I'm not sure if a repair install will have any effects on your backup though.

Technically Vista does not have a repair install as we know. With Win XP, you can boot to the CD and select a repair install, but with Vista you'll have to do an upgrade, which is basically the same, but must be done through Windows. Start your PC > Insert your DVD > Run Setup > Select the Upgrade option when prompted.
