I scanned with Avast and it found no virus. I have adaware installed and will run a scan with that. I've disabled all add-ons, turned off the phishing filter and it worked this morning while I was answering e-mails. I shut the computer off, came back this afternoon and zap - same issue. I delete my cookies and browsing history on a regular basis, so I'm fairly confident that isn't the problem.

I've just e-mailed Gateway technical support because I'm getting more than just a little frustrated with this.

Now I hope I'm not going to sound a little dumb here. The "install disc" that you refer to, Airman - I have the Operating System Disc that came with the machine ... but that wipes out everything and starts from factory fresh. Is that the disc you refer to?
