By chance, are you running 64-bit. I have noticed some excessive HD activity on my 64-bit systems. Regardless, you might try this possible, at least temporary, solution. Shut down, remove battery if a portable, unplug, drain all power by holding the power button, wait 20 minutes. Put everything back together and start up. This "solution" has worked for me before.
