I've had the same problem last time I installed Vista, but since I have a poor memory from a head injury a while back, I don't remember what the update was.

I am not aware of an update that makes Vista 64-bit see 8 GB. I have done very fews updates on my 8 GB 64-bit. But, installing SP1 should take care of the issue unless it is a mobo issue. I have heard of your second problem, but can't remember if there was an easy solution. You could try running the diagnostics from Vista boot pro. And, of course, you could try repairing startup.
