I don't think that a firewall will block a key logger provided that incoming is allowed from the site where the threat originates. I think that standard AV or malware protection would catch it if real-time scanning if enabled, of course, and if the virus or malware signature is known and, thus, included in the protection database. The problem arises when the signature is not yet known and, thus, the database is not able to identify the baddie.
There is one type of AV that I am aware of that can protect against even day-0 viruses, etc. It does so by "identifying unusual activity." The only such software that I am aware of is
"Primary Response SafeConnect," by Sana Security. I am thinking of buying the basic version when it turns Vista ready because I like to fiddle with software. Galt tested it and found it to be pretty effective with relying on a database based on signatures.
