Crabby, I did some digging and found this info:
It's the Data Execution Protection that causes explorer to crash with thumbnails and or opening videos and images.
Go to Start > Run > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance Settings > Data Execution Protection.
Turn on Data Execution Protection except for programs listed below, and check windows explorer.
