Vista’s performance is one of those topics that won’t be exhausted until Windows Seven hits RTM. It all comes down to trade-offs.

Ever since the features of Vista were finalized, Microsoft tried to tip the scale the other way by focusing on performance, with the obvious limitation of not disabling any services. Updates regarding performance and stability are numerous, but most have not hit Windows Update as they are not quite ready (preview releases). The Windows Serviceability Team wants feedback on one such update, available for download at the Microsoft Download Center, before its expected release on Windows Update in January.

This particular update improves “previous issues affecting going into or resuming from sleep/hibernate under some scenarios”, addresses “a previous issue with the disk spindown feature to improve battery life for portable systems” and supposedly has “up to 15% improved performance of disk I/O (i.e., copying/moving/deleting large files).”

This is a reliability update. This update resolves some performance and reliability issues in Windows Vista. By applying this update, you can achieve better performance and responsiveness in various scenarios. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. This is a preview release. At the conclusion of this preview phase, the final version of the update will be released via Windows Update. This update is provided to you and licensed under the Windows Vista License Terms.

Im not 100% sure but YES, I think SP1 will contain these. only way to be absolutely sure is open SP1 and read all the addons via KB's and see...

I tried ity and I get the same thing... I cant get into windows after any update.. This time I have an error message.. It flashed real quick but it said MBR error 3.

1. MBR (Master Boot Record). If you recieve that error it means that the partition is damaged. The partition being the first one you installed windows on.

2. Boot to DVD, select Repair, select command function, Enter the command: "FIXMBR" (without the quotes) at the input prompt and confirm the next question with a "Y" (without the quotes). Use exit to restore the computer.

3.. Many folks have had to error when they have had more than 1 OS installed on the system... Ubantu seems to be worse.

Thanks once again.. I will try on Sunday.. I do have ubuntu installed.. The funny thing is its on a diffrent hard drive.

I have fixed my drive with Norton Disk and then it goes bad again.

I would think I had a drive going bad if it didnt know better. The drive was fine no errors until I installed RC1. I reinstalled windows but Vista did not give me the option to format. When I install XP I have repair.. upgrade and I always get a option to format.

By chance is that HDD a Maxtor... I had one which was partitioned, and I lost one partition due to SP1... my solution was to boot in spare HDD (XP) then copy all files from that partition to a different partition.... boot back to Vista, the correct the partition via Vista... Problem solved but I'm still at a loss as to why... I blame Maxtor and there stupid program which auto moves bad sectors and reserves space so as to have bad spots and never tell you.
(PS: This will be my VERY LAST MAXTOR.. and if Seagate uses that tech It will also be my LAST SEAGATE...) all other HDDs are WD and no problems
with them.

Every WD - HDD was formatted with Vista... Boot to DVD, use repair, then Command, where you have all the DOS commands you need.
The Maxtor HDD did not like the VISTA Format, and I had to use the MAXTOR Disk ... just like Maxtor says on how to install....
