Question

Yes, I understand that problem...
do you have a standalone XP SP2 CD? it will install to XP and make XP SP2.
have your tried making a slipstream of all the XP updates into a new CD.. ??
sure does make it easier that way..Yes it takes some time, but once done it will save you HOURS of work.
[quote]<drive>:\<what> -s:<to drive>:\<what> uncompressed
-x = extract to
-s = upgrade
---------------------------------sample of above-----------
c:\1213-sp2.exe -s:c:\winxp (notice 1213-sp2 is a self install)
<drive>:\<what> -s:<to drive>:\<what> uncompressed

If you use a hotfix use -x to extract the hotfix into the uncompressed volume.

c:\winxp is uncompressed file from the ISO....

after you have notice that all was successful/or unsucessful
successful re compress all the files into a new .iso
I rename my C:\winxp to WXP_SP2.1213 or which ever it was last updated to...this process is via the cmd prompt.
sounds hard but once you test it - it really is very simple.. and works 100% where as the Winbeta an other automated versions do not always work.
above method was offered and showed to Beta testers in the win95 thru win XP days... it still works if the file is correct with Vista..(not currently recommended with Vista.)
---------------------------------------------
or like we use to do... another way is
1. Clean HD / partition
2. install XP SP2 then all updates... make a backup.
if you do this for ea version of XP... then you can install via the backup. FAST and sure... that is the way we did it at computer shows... then open and insert the NEW Serial Number for that client...

felix8406 will become famous soon enough

Yest I wanted to slipstream XP with SP2, but I had sold the Win XP CD a while back when I installed Vista. I have three Win XP CDs from Dell, but they cannot be slipsstream because they have third party (Dell) software installed on them.

I'm looking to see what all I have left.
1. XP home
2. XP Corp
3. SP1
4. SP2 (actually have 2 copies of this) #4 & #7
5. XP SP2 RC1 Update CD
6. XP SP2 RC2 B 2149
7. XP SP2 with advanced Security CD

I'm not sure I still have the info on what to remove from Corp to make Pro.

Looking for XP Pro?? I should still have somewhere.
---------edited------------
Sorry I do not have a straight copy of XP Pro any where at all...

Angry Another reason I will/can not recommend DELL

Just rec'd email from another person trying to install Vista on a DELL computer.

1. CD-RW is set a Master by Dell.
2. DVD-RW is set a Secondary (Slave) by Dell.
3. Boot sequence - via tech support over phone to customer.
a. 1st boot floppy
b. 2nd boot CD (master IDE)
c. HDD

After several hours (per customer) on the telephone, trying to install Vista (upgrade purchased from Dell), and constant failure to accept the DVD as a bootable device... customer was instructed to boot to XP (Dell OEM) and
Install Vista using Clean Install method... after about 1h30min on the phone making a total of almost 4 hrs... customer was offered this solution.
Box the system in the original package ... contact UPS.... ship the system minus the monnitor to (Address in Texas), we will configure the system and install in Dual Boot method so that you have 1. XP and 2. Vista... additional charges exchange of Upgrade DVD ($148.00) for Vista to OEM install Disk for Vista..(additional $70.00) plus shipping and handling and insurance and labor for such... was approximately $225.00
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Customer has ask me for my recommendation... ship or do what.
My recommendation
1. open case and swap the CD and DVD roms.
2. reset the switches on the DVD from Slave to Master.
(Dell support says Bios only allows Booting to a Master Device - not a slave).
I then furnished him a link on "how to set HDDs and Devices
3. reset the switches on the CD from Master to Slave.
4. Try the install again... `1st from Boot to DVD and 2nd from within XP.
Get back and let me know...also I will ask others whom might have a DELL.

Quote:
It appears that the DVD drive must be set as "master" in order for it to boot.
Related subject: When I again attempted the Vista installation from inside XP, I continued to the "acceptance of terms" screen and I accepted. Immediately thereafter, the next step is for Vista to set the boot order - or whatever it is called. IT COULDN'T COMPLETE THE TASK and thus terminated the install process.

Vista was apparently running into the same problem as I had already had. (It obviously did not have the DVD drive as a choice in BIOS - thus it abandoned the installation.
This seems to be CRAP from the Dell Bios... I can boot from either Master or Slave Device in my computer.

Is there any Dell systems out there that can VERIFY the No Boot to a Slave Device...
