WOW - This has got me, and I'm sure a whole bunch of other people, very excited. 'Gadgets' are Microsofts take on the OSX Dashboard. You can integrate them with the sidebar, or let them float on the desktop on their own.

Gadgets can be developed using DHTML among others.
