Introducing Windows 7

Quote:
For me, one of the most exciting times in the release of a new product is right before we show it to the world for the first time. And that time is right now.

In a few weeks we are going to be talking about the details of this release at the PDC and at WinHEC. We will be sharing a pre-beta "developer only release" with attendees of both shows and giving them the first broad in-depth look at what we've been up to. I can't wait for them to see it.

And, as you probably know, since we began development of the next version of the Windows client operating system we have been referring to it by a codename, "Windows 7." But now is a good time to announce that we've decided to officially call the next version of Windows, "Windows 7."

I am sooooooooo ready for the pre-beta!!!

I am highly dubious as to how different such a quick release will be compared to Vista though.

I would love to see a Windows 7 forum. I can't wait to be able to play with Windows 7. It sounds pretty cool.

It sucks Microsoft stated that the public beta will be released early next year.

I have a major issue with Windows 7 already. As you all probably know this is a 'maintenance' release... so the actual core will still be vista code. It seems that the big difference so far between Windows 7 and Vista is touch screen capabilities and I wont even be able to use that, so I am a bit non plussed at the moment.

There's a good read about Windows 7 at Microsoft to unveil test version of Windows 7 - CNN.com. It seems that many people complained so much about Vista's hardware requirements that MS decided to designed Win 7 to use less resources.

I'd see most of these changes being incorporated into SP2 for Vista anyway. Good read though

Ten things I would like to see in Windows 7 compare to Vista:
1. Less hard drive space for installation
2. Less memory requirements
3. Ability to remove optional applications
4. Improve (less annoying) UAC
5. Installation options; i.e. custom installation
6. Faster installation time
7. Ability to run from USB drive or DVD
8. Built in PDF reader
9. Better collaboration tool; easier to use
10. Better cross-platform integration, especially when it comes to networking

Vista has many less bugs and crashes per use than both Leopard and Linux... it's the nature of the beast that when you have an operating system which must adapt to an almost infinite variation of hardware, you are bound to have problems.
