| Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta White Paper Saturday, September 08, 2007, 11:53:16 PM | TomS @Nick White, I'd like to second mercuryLuz's concern's re: slipstreaming in the white paper. Specifically, from the Evaluating SP! Tradeoff column "SP1 will change a significant number of files; customers cannot apply SP1 to offline Windows Vista images" and Deploying SP1 "Slipstream. <snip slipstream definition> _Availability will be limited._ (emphasis added) Microsoft will update Windows Vista retail media with Windows Vista SP1 slipstream media in the future. Slipstream media will also be available to Volume Licensing customers" Please consider very, very carefully the impact on end-users of reversing the long-standing availability of the slipstream capability. Removing that makes it grossly difficult to repair service pack applied installations with non-SP media. Slipstreaming helps more rapidly deploy virtual machines on those non-volume licensed systems where permitted by EULA. It would be a poor choice to reverse 7+ years of precedent. Respectfully, TomS. MS Partner ------------------ Snuffy, I agree also... will be very bad indeed. Since slipstreaming allows the removal of the Pre-SP package by reverting back to the original package. using the original cd/dvd. and REPAIR option - this started in the Pre-XP days called "Whistler-Beta testing". ------------------

| Every thing I can see about removing the ability of SlipStreaming, would be a BIG asset to "Stopping Pirates" and stopping the ability to Revert back to the original install...if a UPGRADE.UPDATE disabled your Pirate hack.. I will miss the ability to Slipstream if it is taken away. It also if taken away, means (IMHO) there will be more PIRATED systems. Since Pirates will offer the hacked system "Pre activated" and no need to link to MS servers. (sort of like the Chinese did to Ultimate Package). Now MS is being SUED due there WGA which they proved is SPYWARE.. There will be more to come on this... and the EU sanctions will be the FIRST big,, WOOP. (IMHO) Also MS has stated they will remove the ability to -Rearm in the next version of Vista, so are we to assume the next version of Vista is Vista SP1. (Opinions on this subjects are appreciated). The ability to not Slip Stream The ability to not -rearm

| So that's why they're doing that. Thanks for clarifying the issue like that.At least now I know the motive behind it. But if it just encourages another means of piracy it's hard to know if its worth the inconvenience. |
