| A new hint about what’s coming (and when) in Microsoft Office 14 Yesterday, September 21, 2007, 8:43:29 AM | Mary Jo Foley Master data management will be part of Office 14, a first Community Technology Preview (CTP) of which is due in the first quarter of 2008. Microsoft already is prepping a first MDM release, code-named "Bulldog," and is specing out the next, codenamed "Greenwich."

| Open source is not just about building and reprogramming the software, but the ability to communicate across the different platforms. For example, currently you need a PDF reader to read PDF documents. So if you send another user a PDF document, he/she needs a PDF reader program to open that document. That’s one reason Microsoft designed Office 2007 with its new standard, or the XML language. Another thing is, especially for large corporations with many terminals, it’s more economical for them to run its software from one server as opposed to installing and managing 50 or more software packages on 50 or more computers. Plus the advantage to access and edit any data from anywhere; without the need for a computer with specific software installed. |

| I understand your opinion, and I'm not disagreeing, but the internet is rapidly changing and companies need to adapt. For those of us who like to play with computers/software, current systems are just great; we get to install software, format HD, upgrade our systems, troubleshoot, etc. Those things are great and I love to do them, but companies wants to make money. For them, doing all those things I just mention is just a waste of time and resources, especially in this global economy. Microsoft, as well as many companies must adapt or risk being left behind. |

| Finding out what the customer wants or need, knowing what the company can offer, looking at the competition and making improvements to offer better and financially sound service. Example: Back in late 80s, early 90s, WordPerfect had the best office application available anywhere. They made a few improvements, but nothing major. They became somewhat too satisfy with their product. But along came MS. They looked at the market and saw what the customer needed and wanted. They developed software that was just better and offered more options than WordPerfect. Plus they kept improving it and making it more user-friendly. Of course, it help that Windows became the most dominant operating system in the world. But the point is that software developers like MS, need to adapt to the changes of the economy in order to survive. |

| I agree! as time changes so do our needs, its companys like Microsoft whos job it is to keep up with want we want and need. If Microsoft said Windows 95 was perfect and no significant changes were needed imagine what type of world we would be in now. Things like digital media and the expansion of the Internet would have still come to pass but it would have been provided by another a company, one who stepped in to for fill the consumers needs. Take Windows vista and office 2007 is has all most everything you need right now, but whos to say it will come this time next year?
