Here is a pretty simple article so you can get an impression of the 3 main operating systems that are out there! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6309425.stm I agree with most of the points in both the Vista section and Linux section. I still haven't used Mac OS X though so reserve judgement! crabby |

| That's a good article Crabby. I think Windows Vista will actually gain users from the Mac and Linux if it continues to evolve; what Toyota calls continuous improvement. Not just a little update every now and then, but something meaningful and that can make a difference; whether it’ll be a new feature, special offers to a new innovative product. Windows has such a great base that it will be tough for both Mac and Linux to overcome, even if they join forces. One thing that Linux has against it is the same thing that makes it affordable…open source. There are just too many developers and too many versions of the OS. This confuses the majority of PC user who don’t really understand which Linux OZ is best for them. And let’s not forget the lack of support; sure you can get support from other users, but one usually gets three or four different responses to the same question o a complicated answer to a simple question.

| Linux can actually cost more to install than windows. Support, training, and lost productivity during the "learning curve" can drive the cost up more than windows. Linux is a great OS for some applications. To decide what would be best for a situation you need to look at all sides of the issue. The majority of the time I use windows. There are a few specific applications where I use Linux (or BSD) over windows. There is a server that is BSD based that I like for some small businesses for instance. |
