Law and morals are clearly out of sync when it concerns sharing copyrighted works on the Internet. To give an example, David Pogue, technology writer for the New York Times often questions his public during talks to find out where the line between wrong and right lies in this case. He starts of with a simple statement such as: “I own a certain CD, but it got scratched. So I borrow the same CD from the library and rip it to my computer.” He then asks the public whether they think it’s wrong or not. Normally the more extreme the examples are, the more hands are raised, but when he spoke to an audience of 500 college students, something different happened. Finally, with mock exasperation, I said, “O.K., let’s try one that’s a little less complicated: You want a movie or an album. You don’t want to pay for it. So you download it.” There it was: the bald-faced, worst-case example, without any nuance or mitigating factors whatsoever. “Who thinks that might be wrong?” Two hands out of 500. Pogue was blown away by this response, and he realized that there is a clear generation gap when it comes to copyright morals... http://torrentfreak.com/piracy-moral...change-071323/ <|> by Snuffy there is a clear generation gap on more than copyright materials. I for one find it really hard to understand what my Grand Children are saying.. The older they are the easier it is to understand... but those that spend more time around GranPa and GranMa talk differently than those we only see 3 or 4 times a year.

| If I had a CD and a Key and it broke I would find out what the company policy was on such matters and if it was against the law to download a new copy I would follow the rules and view it the same way I would view, for example a plate that I bought and broke and now need a new one. Just my opinion. Last edited by Vistanoob : 12-25-2007 at 03:04 AM. |

| Fair but what are you paying for? Are you paying for the disk or the code to use it? When I buy software I see it in two ways. 1. the media 2. the legal way to use it I am more careful with my codes than I am with my media. |

| I think that following the company's rules is the answer. And, I think following the law is the answer on other matters, including copyrighted materials. Societies don't work well if their members don't follow the "rules" even if some don't agree with the rules. If an individual doesn't like the rules, then the options are to work to change them or to disregard them and accept the consequences, as one's on responsibitliy, if caught.

| I agree with what you said. It is just some are outdated or do not fit current society. Dumb Laws in Illinois You must contact the police before entering the city in an automobile. Law forbids eating in a place that is on fire. Humming on public streets is prohibited on Sundays. Just to name a few..lol Some compinies allow you to download. Nero Roxio You can download over and over.. You just buy the key. This is what it all should be. ...imho... |

| Men must walk on the sidewalk closest to the street when passing a Lady... 1 day in jail. If you chew, spit in the dirt not on the board walk. 2 days in Jail Tipping of hat required to all Ladies (women) on Sunday. fine 50 cents Lots of Laws never removed from the Books... No honking of horns if horses present on main street. I agree it should be 100% legal to Download any software... KEYs you need to buy... I paid $50.00 per for two Home Premium Keys from MS and the Download of Vista Upgrade is allowed ...

| There, of course, are old laws that obviously are not currently enforced or applicable. Still, I never honk when horses are on main street. ![]()

| I do agree that once you buy the product and have the key you should have the option for downloading a replacement in the case of accidental loss or breakage. To me it is only fair and all should follow that policy, in my opinion. I also think that once I buy a program I should be able to install it on all my computers if I want to, but if it isn't allowed, I don't try to get away with it. Luckily a lot of programs now can be installed on multiple computers. |
