Question Verify if MS updated you or not - STEALTH

Microsoft patches Windows even if you say no
Friday, September 14, 2007, 10:36:38 AM | JoelGeek
Numerous reports are coming in from users who have experienced unsanctioned updates of their machines by Microsoft. According to WindowsSecrets.com, the unauthorized patches are appearing on both XP and Vista and include both DLLs and executable files. So far the reported list includes:

In Vista, the following files are updated:

1. wuapi.dll
2. wuapp.exe
3. wuauclt.exe
4. wuaueng.dll
5. wucltux.dll
6. wudriver.dll
7. wups.dll
8. wups2.dll
9. wuwebv.dll

In XP, the following files are updated:

1. cdm.dll
2. wuapi.dll
3. wuauclt.exe
4. wuaucpl.cpl
5. wuaueng.dll
6. wucltui.dll
7. wups.dll
8. wups2.dll
9. wuweb.dll

As of this writing, Microsoft has not provided any information as to why it is pushing out updates without permission.

Joel’s Opinion

There are so many problems with Microsoft doing this. The most obvious is a violation of privacy. Most of the updates are occurring on machines where the users have specifically opted-out of automatic install.

In my case, though, it’s even more serious. I have to selectively choose which updates I will allow because in the past I have received a BSOD when allowing all of the suggested updates to occur. I did happen to notice that my machine rebooted the other day and I have been receiving more BSODs than usual, so I’ll be sure to check to see if my files were updated without my consent.

I’ll also e-mail this article to a number of folks in Redmond and see if I can get to the bottom of this. I’m definitely shocked that Microsoft would attempt something like this, especially since if this happens in a corporate environment, security is severely compromised.

I once worked at a company that pushed out an unauthorized bug fix. The end result was massive fines and termination of employees. Microsoft should take note.

All my items are (properties) 7.0.6000.381-8-23-07, 11:08AM
Now it also is strange that the only AUTOUPDATE which failed in my update list is :
Quote:
Windows Update software 7.0.6000.381

Installation date: ‎8/‎23/‎2007 11:11 AM

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 80010108

Update type: Important

Another good article. No wonder people are angry.
