| A senior Microsoft Corp. executive says the company is concerned that uncertified third-party software loaded onto new computers by manufacturers could hurt the launch of consumer versions of its Windows Vista operating system later this month. In a discussion Tuesday night at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Microsoft official told CBC News Online, on condition of anonymity, that the world's largest software maker is frustrated by legal shackles that prevent the company from restricting what kinds of software major computer makers install on new PCs. "We can't do anything about it because it would be illegal," the executive said in reference to restrictions placed on the company following a U.S. federal anti-trust lawsuit against the company. Or is it really due to Vista being violated by HACKERS from Russia and KMS Servers in China ????

| There is reason to be concerned. While my experiences are anachornistic, when I upgrading from XP a great deal of my original software became null and void. And, there still is a great deal of software that is not Vista ready. So, its a crap shoot when you try to install it/use it since Vista does not always warn you about incompatibilities. I think that only the brave and at least semi-knowledgeable should be trying to use Vista. There are going to be a lot of people getting into trouble. And, their support will be problematic since buying a Vista ready PC does not guarantee support if Vista is installed--which seems reasonable. After all many computers are Linux ready, and support for Linux and related software should not really be expected.

| I think, it's not a big problem when Vista comes a bit later. Mac OS X "Leopard" will be introduced in spring and for MS it's no advantage to release Vista before Leopard. Maybe both will came at the same time and people, running Windows on a Mac can stop the time of compromises, for "Boot camp" is integrated in Leopard and no Beta anymore.

| Might be nice if delayed ???? I think it would be nice if once MS was actually on Time...Vista is missing so much for original concept...I was surprised they decided to call it Vista.. actually the question is: If MS actually DELAYS, will they still allow the current versions to remain working... If yes, how long? If No, How long will it work? slmgr.vbs -rearm has a default of 3 times...to reset to 30 days..I would not like to go back to v5840 that was active for 7 months..

Last Updated: Tuesday, January 9, 2007 | 8:13 PM ET CBC News Microsoft founder Bill Gates said Sunday that he has planned a group of products he hopes will encourage the widespread adoption of connected homes, announcing a series of partnerships with content providers for Vista's Windows Media Center. Bill Gates, shown in an undated photo, announced a series of partnerships with content providers for Vista's Windows Media Center on Sunday. (Associated Press) The new deals with NASCAR, Fox Sports, Nickelodeon and Showtime will deliver specialized content — most of which will be free — through Windows Media Center. -snip- Vista, the first major Windows upgrade since Windows XP launched in 2001, was made available on Nov. 30, 2006, to businesses that buy Windows licences in bulk. Consumers generally won't be able to get Vista until Jan. 30.

| I don't think Vista will be delayed, but third party software is a problem for Windows. I don't think that will ever go away unless MS verify and certify each new application that will come across. Also, like Snuffy just mentioned, MS wants to wire the whole house so music, television and everything else is controlled through a PC. A long time ago I read an article about controlling kitchen devices, e.g. refrigerators, coffee makers, etc. thorough a PC, but I have yet to see that. I do think that eventually it'll be affordable enough for most people to do. That'll be great.

| Oh boy. That's what I want to have to do--reinstall my house software every other day. Then, there'll be an SP2 because all the houses are being snooped, virused, and malwired, etc. And, then every house will have to have a Vista. Some houses will support glass, while some won't. Then, the heating bills of the latter will be way high and everyone will be sick and bitten by bugs all the time. Where will it all end? ![]()

| You are right. I forgot about those items. Then, there's the new CiscoPhone that is an iPod, a web surfer, a phone, and an attorney all rolled into one.

| I don't think that Vista will be delayed (again). I do however, expect to see many issues with incompatable software and driver issues. The same thing happened with windows 98, ME, 2000, XP.......... For the majority of my business clients, I am not recommending that they upgrade for at least a year (sp1). For most home users it is not an issue. I still know businesses that are running windows 95 because of software compatability issues. Those computers are NOT connected to a WAN in any way though. Are there going to be growing pains with Vista? Most likely yes. That happens with any major upgrade. Will the third party software issues push back the release date again? Probably not. Vista has already been shipped to the OEMs. |
