Wink Vista SP1 6001.17042 v.658

Vista SP1, v.658 First Impressions

Mike Walker: To give you guys a sneak peek at the SP1 build. I just installed Vista SP1 with zero issues. The upgrade process seamless and took approx. an hour. There was only one concern however. My box was waiting for about 20 minutes to shut down. Other than that, all goodness.

I have noticed a huge difference in performance of my machine, it's like someone injected an espresso into my Vista! This is my first day using so I'll be sure to check back in to let you guys and gals know how things are going.

Some of these new features that are under the covers that screen shots will not be able to show you:

Secure Sockets Tunneling Protocol (SSTP) allows for easier setup of VPN connections due to the way it works with firewalls, NAT devices etc....
Bitlocker Drive Encryption has been enhanced to support encrypting additional volumes besides the current limitation on the C: volume. It will also support three factor authentication (i.e. TPM + Pin + Dongle)
Disk Defragmenter has also been improved to give administrators additional control over what and when volumes get defragmented with the scheduler
Support for Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) booting on x64 based machines
Support for the ExFAT file format used in flash memory
Support for SD-Advanced DMA
Improved network diagnostics
Performance improvements
Screen shots of the install process...

For more info ask Felix he has it..

felix8406 will become famous soon enough

It's the one hour to install that I don't get. I guess it depends on the system, but it didn't take me that long to install.

Wink Media Center v17042 might be RC1...

Might depend on the speed of your internet connection...
My crap ISP is basically what I see from MS in the 500kbps, which is very slow..I also see many speeds under 400 kbps, which might also be why I have had to install the SP1 packages 2 times...

But the main thing is check your version of Media Center... the version might be RC1... where v17063 is still Beta.

Wink SP1 Release Candiate (RC) Preview

Vista SP1: Release Candidate test build goes to 15,000 testers
Today, November 14, 2007, 1 hour ago | Mary Jo Foley
On November 14, Microsoft released a new test build of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 -- designated the SP1 Release Candiate (RC) Preview -- to a slightly expanded group of 15,000 pre-selected testers. Still no update on when Microsoft plans to make an SP1 test build available more broadly via MSDN or other channels.

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/zdnet.../~3/184860955/

Microsoft made a first public beta of Vista SP1 available to 12,000 testers in September. The new build, No. 6001.17042, can be downloaded by invited testers from Microsoft’s private Connect test site.

Wink Vista SP1 Beta 6001.17402 v.658

Last nite I reset another system to SP1 v.17042.. beleive me it took a long time..most people say "I'm full of crap" it only takes 20 min or so...
OK, many tests, and If you do a 100% Clean install of Vista...then upgrade it is much faster...
I have not did this. I simply remove the current SP1 (that I have installed) average time is about 6 to 10 min...(depends on your system).
Reboot... found the needed new packages for 17042... this took 14m30s to dl install and reboot for final sp1 17042 package of 65.7MB... this time was started at 11:12PM... things moved pretty fast until about 46%.. then it ground to a halt... took 10m to get the next 1%... @ 11:45pm I shut down the screen and went to bed... complete stood at 48%... times of upto and more than 1hour to download the complete package have been recorded.
DO NOT BE IN A HURRY...HERE IS the log file from Vista it self.. on time which indicated 1h13s for Download of SP1 v.17042
2007-11-14 23:12:00:956-0600 AutomaticUpdates Success Software Synchronization Windows Update Client successfully detected 35 updates.

Microsoft is also touting improvements in "the speed of copying and extracting files," so we tested a few of those scenarios. We noted a slight increase in the time required to copy 562 JPEG images totalling 1.9GB from an SD Card to the hard drive of the aforementioned HP Compaq notebook

I do not use Media Center therefore it is not installed. but all posts state besides SHUTDOWN-fix, Media Center was one of the next updated...since Media Center is the official RC1 version...

Maybe someone that uses Media Center will install RC1 and post there opinions..

Where I rant about Microsoft, Windows Vista, Windows Live, and anything else.

Hide "TV + Movies" in Windows Media Center
Don't have a TV tuner installed in your computer but still enjoy using Windows Media Center?
If so, there is a simple registry modification that you can make to disable the "TV + Movies" item in Media Center.

Click on Start, and in the "Start Search" field type "REGEDIT", then press Enter.
If User Account Control prompts you for consent, provide the appropriate credentials or provide consent.
In the navigation pane, locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Media Center\Start Menu.
In the right hand pane, you will see a "REG_DWORD" value with a name of "HideTV", which has a default value of 0. Double click the "HideTV" DWORD and change its value to 1.
Close the Windows Registry Editor.
Now launch Windows Media Center, you should no longer see the "TV + Movies" option listed.

NOTE: This does remove the "Play DVD" option as it is listed under "TV + Movies", but fear not -- when you put a DVD into the system while Media Center is running, by default it will automatically begin playing.
