Hi w66. If 66 is your age, then you definitely are not alone here? And, a big to you. Unfortunately, I know nothing about "Ares" and "Bearshare." Are they torrents?

Make sure you have the latest versions of the software. Ares is supposed to be Vista-compatible. Not sure about Bearshare.

I can answer that question..this is very similar to what another person on Vista Babble was experiencing with BitTorrent.

It really depends on how many people are sharing the same file you are downloading.

So if only 1 other person was sharing the file the speed to download the file would not be that great but the more people who are the faster your downloads will be.

P.S Just to say I would not recommend Ares and Bearshare as I have used them in the past and because not people use those programs, your downloads won't be as fast as they could be if you switched to a more popular file-sharing program such as LimeWire..but just a suggestion.

Hope this has answered your question.

Check your Firewall settings and make sure that they are not blocked, Torrent and p2p programs are usually blocked by default on vista. Firewall settings can be accessed in the control panel look on the programs list and check "allow" on your desired programs.

I have checked on other sites regarding your problem and lots of people recommend you reinstall the applications.

More connections for Vista

Normal open pages in Vista is rather small (4) ... if you want more open slots do this:
change for Vista REGISTERY CHANGE:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Internet Settings
1) Right click in the empty space, and create a new DWord (32-bit) value. Name it:
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server (The 0 beside Server is a zero)
2) Double click this entry and modify the value to 3.
3) Create another DWord:
MaxConnectionsPerServer
4) Once again, double click this entry and modify the value to 3.
If you have Internet Explorer open, just restart it and you should be able to have an unlimited number of simultaneous downloads running.

This will assist you in have more open connection in Vista... Default is 4.
was set to kill p2p programs... or make them slow as hell.

USE THIS REG MODIFICATION WITH CARE... EXACTLY AS I HAVE POSTED...
IT WORKS FOR ME.. AND NOT PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN NOTICED..

Additional info: Aug 26 1942... I do like OLD people...hehehe

It is worth noting that windows has a connection restriction to slow the spread of worms etc... it can be over ridden and so speed up downloads with many seeders/peers... you should also check you are using an open IN port because torrents limit your speed if you arent seen to be sharing (the IN port will allow users to download properly from you and you will receive credit for your uploads)

There is a registry hack used to increase the number of connections... check the utorrent FAQ on howto get faster speeds
