Sort of like Tipp-Ex? Not sure if you have Tipp-Ex in the USA as its a German product but i think thats the same.

did the typewriters have the same layout as a standard computer keyboard?

Yes, they had the same awkward layout. I don't know if you are familiar with a word processor machine. Looks like a computer, and may have limited memory, but it's strictly for typing documents, that's a typewriter. Of course, they became more sophisticated throughout the years.
