Glad you chose us! It could be many things. So I would suggest you find out the program that is causing it first. To do this you can get a hard drive activity monitor. Two I know of are called HDDLED and DriveMon. They should be able to show you what is causing the issue. After you have found out the name of it, you should be able to figure out what program is causing it and delete/update as necessary

Thxs for your response, well i downloaded both of those progams and the
HDLED just flashes on taskbar to show the activity but does not actually tell you whats using it and the drivemon doe not really help either it just basicly tells me how much space i have on my hddrive etc I dont think its a program but more of a windows one as it starts to happen almost as soon as vista is loaded, to be more acurate the hddrive led is running constant for 1st 10 mins on every startup which dramaticly reduces performance after that it settles down its very confusing never happened on xp

Lol, sorry I have never used those programs myself I am at work so can't realy help too much atm, but I am sure there is a way to find out what programs are reading what.

It could be a vista feature (like defrag) that is caught in a perpetual loop, or has a schedule time when the PC is switched off so automaticallly starts when you switch it on etc.

There are so many thins it COULD be that the only real way you can fix it is to find out what it is.

felix8406 will become famous soon enough

GPStorey, you shouldn't worry too much about it, the issue will go away as soon as Vista stop setting up your PC. Vista performs maintenance and run many process in the background. This takes quite sometime to accomplish at first after the OS has been installed.

Wow... only 26% memory! My Vista install uses about 45% of my 2GB It looks like you have doe all the basic stuff. Did this always happen? And I presume you checked antivirus/spyware/adware scans etc? Have you looked at the performance monitor? It gives a graphical representation of CPU RAM and disk loads. When it is happening could you post a screeny of it?

Hey GPStorey!

Go to start and in the search bar type 'reliability'. It will list all the indexed items with the word reliability in them. This will include the Reliability and Performance monitor. Go into it. The first screen should show the graphs I was talking about. If you click the arrow on 'Disk' you will see all the items that use the hard drive. These are dynamic and cumulative figures. Therefore you should be able to see on eof the figures rising quickly. That one is your issue!

To take a screen shot simply use the Snipping tool that comes with Vista. This is in Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Snipping Tool. When it is open you simply drag a box around the information you want to capture and it takes a screen shot of that area.
