I bought a new computer with Vista - thanks to your previous advice, but I now have a problem which I can't fix. While surfing the net with my new "toy", I've ended up with some video files that I can't delete, because the file names are too long, the error box suggests that I shorten the file names by renaming them, but I've tried everything, even safe mode, but try as I will, there is no way that this new system will allow me to re-name these files to allow me to delete them. Do you have a solution?? Regards Paul |

| The problem I think is that Windows renames long files (and folders) to xxxxxx~1.xxx where the first six characters are used plus the ~1 and the file extension (aka the "8.3" format). So I would try opening up command window, navigate to the folder this file is located and then del xxxxxx~1.xxx. For example, if the file was thisisaverylongfile.mpg I would type in del thisis~1.mpg . Hope this helps.

| Are they really files? What are the .ext's by name ... as viewed via properties. Vista as best I knew did not have atoolongofaname . I have one file that is 53 characters in length (downloaded and saved from Microsoft). As a video did you shut the player down correctly? have you rebooted since viewing them? God forbid, are they PRON with some trojan/viris loaded?

| AVG and Bit Defender will not assist in removing PORN. many porn sites, look onto your media viewer via a trojan/viris which is embedded with them... several ways to get them unhooked. 1. Remove every MEDIA PLAYER. You can then try to delete the movie, since it will not "think it is open" Really hard to delete anything that is OPEN or in ~tmp statis. 2. Shut down your system... leave off for 3 min or more... then restart. This should clean any inuse, option. then try to Delete your movies, recommend you hold down Ctrl when you click Delete... that totally removes and does not store in the Recycle Bin.. 3. Reboot into SAFE MODE with CMD prompt. ---a. start --> cmd right click & (run as admin) ---b. move to the x:\directory\folder\ and del /s TMPFist*.* Quote:
Try these first then let me know if it workd or exactly what you screen replyed with.
