I have 2 hard drives C: and D:. When I first installed Vista, I was able to successfully perform a complete PC backup to my D: drive with no problem. Now, when I go to perform the backup, it doesn't recognize my D: drive at all. It only sees my DVD device. There's plenty of free space on the D: drive.

Microsoft claims that there's an application that's "watching" the D: drive preventing the backup from seeing the drive as available. If I change the drive letter to Z: for example, it works. When I change it back to D: it fails.

From the System Config tool, I've even disabled all of the user Services and applications from the Startup tab. Anyone have an idea where the problem is or what application might be preventing backup from seeing the drive?

That's a bit of crazy It's probably due to default drive letters within the restore program.

As Windows is closed source you probably cant alter it

I would check to see what is running like Diskeeper running if you use it or a Photo-shop type app that uses another drive for its cache or even you virtual memory set to use d drive any thing that could be using the drive for any purpose its like when you try and delete some thing and it says it is being used by the system or busyied by someother software on the system.

I you have two hard drives the best backup I have found is Acronis

I have used it for a couple of years now and for me it has never failed
you can either burn to dvd or second hard drive
you can also create a bootable disc wich you simply boot to it program select the file and restore complete with windows registration details
