Card Reader - Autoplay - Other Software

This may be an old question. This may be a real basic question.

I have a digital camera. I have a built in card reader. I put the Secure Digtital card into the card reader and a Windows dialog box comes up. Heading: Autoplay then below Removable Disk (J Then PICTURE OPTIONS and a list of things I can do with the pictures on the SD card on my desktop.

This all works fine. I like this. I am happy with this. And this is what I want.

I have since gone out and purchased two half way decent point and shoot compact digital pocket cameras. A Panasonic DMC-LZ7 Lumix and a Samsung S800. I like both cameras. The Panasonic is probably a better camera but I like the Samsung as it is slightly smaller. Both use AA batteries which was my requirement.

Each camera comes with its own software. I have loaded both softwares and I probably did not pay enough attention to all the dialog boxes when loading the software.

Here is the PROBLEM:

NOW, when I put any SD card into my card reader it seems that all the software is fighting with each other as to who gets the pictures. The regular Windows dialog box comes up onto screen (which I want) AND the Lumix software comes up on screen AND the Samsung photo software comes up on screen. I have to continually X or cancel the Lumix and Samsung software to get to my Windows Autoplay dialog box (which I want).

I do wish to keep all photo software as each has some features I desire. So I just don't want to uninstall one or both.

How do I stop the Lumix software and the Samsung software from immediately jumping onto my screen when I put a SD picture card into my card reader? I want to keep the default Windows Autoplay/Picture options as the only one to initially handle all my pictures.

I hope I have explained this correctly.

Your programs are set to come up automatically when Windows starts, or are set with the option to open files with specfic extension

1. Open Windows Defender.
2. Click Tools > Software Explorer.
3. In the Category box, click Startup Programs.
4. Select the program that you want to prevent from running, and then click Disable.
5. Click Yes to confirm your option
6. Repeat for the other programs

This brings me to some of my previous posts and suggestions about installing software. You should always select Custom or Advanced Installation when installing software. Most people are intimidated about the “This is for experience users” message; don’t be. When selecting the custom or advanced installation, you’ll have control of what gets install. Some programs install additional application that you may not need or want, e.g. Acrobat Reader installs Google Toolbar. Other programs may install additional shortcuts on their desktop or an additional toolbar on their browser, e.g. Yahoo.

Question You might have to uninstall

If by chance your program can not be removed/disabled from starting.. as posted by Felix. You can also remove the program(s). then Reboot so as to remove all reference from memory, then install again using the "advanced/custom" mode.

Thank you all.

I could not find it at Windows Defender.

I will try the custom install. Uninstall then install.

Thank you.

Also, I do dislike these photo softwares that try to take over/control all digital pictures.

I had a long debate with a Nero Suite on my XP that could not be solved.
The suite came with some free Nero photo editing software that did away with the default Windows Autoplay. Nero's advice. Don't use the Nero photo editing software. So I uninstalled all of Nero and installed everything but the photo editing software and that solved the problem. But I paid for a complete suite. That was my complaint with Nero. I paid for a suite yet Nero told me to not use the photo editing software in order to keep my Windows Autoplay. I got no satisfaction with Nero and some of the emails were in German.

At least with Vista, all do come up on screen and I can x out or stop software what I don't want to use with the photo's.

I've been through that myself with Photoshop Elements 3, and my Nikonview software. Conflicts that caused my poor camera to shut down spontaneously. I ended up uninstalling Elements 3 (have Elements2 anyway) and that solved the problem. That was on my XP system.
Vista just accepted them, with an autoplay dialogue box, and no software from Nikon was needed. (not that it's needed in XP but I was total newbie and it was easier with the Nikonview software) Vista is so user-friendlythat way.
Photo editors can be really possessive and I don't like that at all either.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 has no custom install

I have add/remove Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 twice.

I find no 'custom install'.

I am trying to stop Adobe from showing up on my screen when I insert a SD Secure Digital photo card. I want just the default Windows Autoplay that asks me what I want to do with my pictures. Adobe show up.

How do I stop Adobe from showing up on my screen every time I put my SD photo card in card reader?

I find no 'custom install' when installing this software.

Try this: Click Start > Default Programs > Change AutoPlay Settings. If that doesn't work, try Set program access and computer defaults or Set default programs options.

Wink Made Default the same way you did in XP...

Have your tried simply open directory where the [pic is. then right click the pic... and "open with" then click the "Set as default" then open it with what ever program you want as your default...

You can then change every ext (.jpg, png, bmp, etc etc) to same program...

the same way you did in XP...

I don't understand this procedure.

I have contacted Adobe Customer Support. WOW! What a disgrace. They want 29.95 for one call. There is no email technical support. I did get a Customer Service to issue me an ID and a Case Number. But they advised me to take all this and go to Technical Support which brings in the 29.95 for one incident.

It never ceases to amaze me that these photo softwares try to take over ones computer.

Adobe may be great software. But if I can't get such a simple question answered by technical or customer support, what good is it.

Adobe PhotoShop Elements 5.0 has no custom install. So I am stuck. Either pay 29.95 or dump the software.

It just amazes me that I can't just open Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 and find some "options" inside this software and tell it to stop automatically opening when I insert a photo memory card or any memory card.

Shame on ADOBE. Adobe support in non-existant except for a price. I haven't even started using this software and Adobe want 29.95. Ouch !
