Hi Friends: I did a Complete PC Restore from a disk image I made a few days ago using Windows Complete PC Backup. The restore went perfectly and took no more than 20 minutes using a firewire 400 drive. I had been itching to try this procedure. I did the restore in an attempt to solve my problem of not being able to connect to Windows Update. However, apparently the problem developed earlier than the creation of my image, and I was unaware. I can still check for updates for other programs using Windows Update, but just can't get Windows Updates. I thought that OneCare might be the problem, but it wasn't as I installed it after creating the image. Some have suggested that Windows Update stops working once one has done all possible updates. I have done one update that I have heard of only a few doing. So, maybe I have done all, and almost no one else has done so. Any thoughts?

| The error code you have posted on another thread is a syncing error. I would research it, but I am sure you can do it The only time I ever had this issue was because I had an incorrect system date/time (due to dual booting) crabby |

| Thanks crabman. I tried all the easy stuff before doing the restore. My code doesn't actually match any of those in help. I will search on the code today. And, actually, before I did my Complete PC Restore, I reinstalled from within 5728 to no avail. Doing so messed up the Outlook syncing miracle I had pulled off earlier. So, that's actually the reason I did the restore. The restore fixed my syncing miracle, but still left me unable to get to Windows Update. Possibly the issue had arisen before I made my image, and I was unaware of its development. I am thinking of moving to 5744 now that I know why I got the "can't connect to updates" message before when I started my upgrade to 5744. I have found that others report the Windows Update problem going away after either upgrading or clean installing to 5744. No, I am not going to do a clean install. ![]()

| I have installed all updates so far but my windows update still works (yes I know I was the 1st person to find the prob) however I did read on the download page for RC2 (when it was up) that there may be a lesser level of support via windows update for RC2. |

| I can see why... as the release gets closer they will want to make the distinction between beta and retail, we will probably be losing support soon crabby |

| I searched and found "thousands" having the problem. I could find no solutions--except, for some/many, moving to 5744 works--either by upgrade or cleanism. So, here I go. Hope I don't lose my miracle, be able to do the needed update, and having to go back to 5728 again. But, hey, I'm having fun and what's another 20 minutes anyway. Here I go--5744. Oh, and you are welcome for the 5 sec deal. Sorry I wasn't faster. ![]()

| I'm back. I aborted again. I was willing to go with no updating during install, but when I was told that MusicMatch wouldn't work again, I said no no. I think I am going to have to be a confirmed 5728aholic. Don't want to lose the well-working system I have. I'll keep watched the error thing and see if a solution turns up--or if it keeps happening to more and more with 5744. And, there was the strange MS message for both systems about "less future support than for earlier versions." Maybe we are there.
