Hi Friends: The issue of lost product keys comes up ocassionally--by those with Vista installed. On another site, I bumped into Product Key 1.06: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html. I am not sure if the program is Vista compatible or if it will get Vista product keys, but it might be worth a try if one is desperate.

| To find your key just go to System in the control panel... it's at the bottom. No need for that bit of software now crabby |

That is the Product ID (whatever that is), not the product key.

From Microsoft website: “The product key is basically the serial number for the software. Once the software is installed it generates and ID which is sent to Microsoft along with a "hardware hash" (a non-unique number generated from the PC's hardware configuration) during activation.” As I understanding, as long as your PC configuration (CPU, MOB, etc.) stays basically the same, u can continue to activate the software on the same PC using the same product key and the ID should stay the same. |

| I think the product key is the license for that particualr product; if u get ms office you get the key to identify that particular copy. When that copy is installed, it will produce an ID indicating to microsoft the program was installed on a specific system. If u only have one license and try to install the program on another PC, it will produce a different ID and when trying to activate the program it will show up on Microsoft data base as an illegal installation. The ID identifies two things; the product key and your hardware configuration. If u have a program that has been previously installed on another PC, u can isntall it and call Microsoft to get issue another ID, e.g. if u bought a new PC. |
