Hi All: If you are using MacDrive, then I suggest that you uninstall it before beginning an upgrade from XL to 5384; it can be annoying until you finally get it turned off. Also, I would unintall Norton Ghost (5384 can't do so), anything AOL, anything McAfee, and the Google Desktop before upgrading. Vista requires uninstalling most, if not all, McAfee security programs before upgrading to Vista. Note that all the rest can be turned off, one way or another, so that they cause no annoyances with a little effort after upgrading. I just like things to be as clean as possible. So, I would have unintalled the items mentioned above before upgrading had I known they were incompatible up front. Edit: And, I would uninstall Real Audio and especially the Synpatics touchpad driver(s). Check here: http://www.vistababble.com/forums/vi...em-5384-a.html

| When I installed, the first thing it told me was that I needed to uninstall AVG, which of course I did. I now use Avast, which works great. Also, the one thing I had trouble with (oddly enough) was Microsoft's Windows Desktop Search. It caused a problem on booting up. So, I simply removed it from the startup. It's not needed anyway, since Vista comes with its own excellent search function. (which was probably conflicting with the old desktop search). I was also using Comodo Backup, which was apparently not compatible, but again, since Vista comes with a backup function, I don't need Comodo, so that wasn't really an issue. Otherwise, I've really had very few problems. The occasional IE7 crash...but most of the time it restarts itself a second or two later, so even that isn't all that much of a bother.

| Great info. My guess is that you installed 64 bit version. My version is the 32 bit. So, we, natually, would expect different incompatibilities, I guess. I haven't used IE7 much, but I have tried it without problems. I like it fine, but am sticking with Firefox for now. I need to do something about AV protection, and I will try Avast--if I ever get my staying-online-with-my-Vista-drive problem solved.

| Nope, I'm using the 32 bit version. But I'm sure different computers with different hardware and different software installed will make each person's experience different. Also, don't get me wrong, I love Firefox and have used it for a long time. But since I'm in "Vista mode", I'm now using IE7 exclusively to: 1) test it, 2) see if I like it, and 3) see if I can live without Firefox. Same for Thunderbird vs. Windows Mail. I'm now exclusively using Windows Mail for the same reasons.

| Good points. I had thought about that too, but have not yet given in to the "appropriate" logic for the circumstances.
