To quickly change the size of the desktop icons do the following: Hold down the Ctrl key and scroll with your mouse wheel to adjust the size of the icons.

This works with font sizes as well, in both browsers and documents.

A tip from Exploring Windows: Upgrading to Windows Vista: Know your options Newsletter

Hide icons in the notification area

If you don't want to see icons in your notification area (the bottom-right corner near the clock), regardless of whether or not they're in use, here's how to remove them:

1. Right-click the Start menu and then click Properties.
2. Click the taskbar tab and then click the Customize button.
3. Scroll to the icon that you want to remove and click its behavior listed on the right. Change the icon's status by selecting from the drop-down menu.
4. When you're finished, click OK.

How to easily share folders in Vista:

Open any explorer windows, e.g. “Documents”. Highlight the document, i.e. single click. From the command bar select “Share”. Use the down-arrow to select Administrator, all users in your list, or type the name of the person in the network, click Add, and then select the permission level.

Vista can also auto-generate an email that will allow the recipient quick access to the shared document.

If you are having trouble seeing the PC screen or reading text, you can use Vista Magnifier. Simply press "Windows Logo + U" keys combination, and select "Start Magnifier".

How to change the Layout of Vista’s Explorer (not Internet Explorer):

1. Open “Vista Explorer”, Right-click Start button and choose Explore
2. On the Command Bar click Organize, then Layout
3. Choose one or all four choices: Menu Bar for the classic menu; Details Pane for details of folders and files; Preview Pane provides a preview of documents when available; and the Navigation Pane, which changes what is displayed in the current folder.

Snuffy, great tip. I found an update for Windows Mail that though it was downloaded, it was not installed.

For those who are accustomed to using briefcase under Win XP, MS included it in Vista so you can continue synchronizing your files. The briefcase is excellent to keep files in sync between two PCs that are not on the same network. Here are steps to using briefcase:

1. On your desktop or folder, right-click > select New > Briefcase
2. Rename your Briefcase (optional)
3. Drag or copy any files you want to sync into the briefcase
4. Right-click the Briefcase and select “Send to” and choose the removable media you want to copy it to
5. Remove the removable media, insert it into the second PC, open the briefcase and make any changes you want to the files and save the changes (Note: do not copy the briefcase to the second PC)
6. Reinsert the media into the first PC, right-click the Briefcase and select Update All

If you are using Briefcase over a network, simply move the Briefcase to the second PC, and once you or the other user has made changes to the files, right-click the Briefcase and select Update All
