Risky (?) Compatibility Update Coming

Apparently, this compatibility update is on the way--at least it has not yet hit my Windows Update. I am a tad afraid of it because of what is said in red part way down on the page. I'd be happier if MS had said which makes might be affected. This update superceeds 935280--which I have installed.

I am going to start being more careful with the installation of updates. As it is, I don't install security updates because there are so many I am concerned that system perfomance might suffer, and I feel well protected and don't frequent intuitively risky sites. I just try to install the updates that may make my machines run better given what I typically use. I know, of course, that I am taking additional risk by ignoring the security updates. All thoughts welcome.

Edit: I checked out 935280; it says the same thing:

"Note After you install this update, a CD device or a DVD device may not work correctly. If you select the device in Device Manager and then view the properties for the device, you may receive the following error message:

The software for this device has been blocked from starting because it is known to have problems with Windows. Contact the hardware vendor for a new driver. (Code 48)

This problem occurs because a earlier application may install drivers that are incompatible with Windows Vista."

Oh well, I still am going to be more careful about installing updates.

So is it a fixable error? That is kinda strange how a compatibillity update can break somthing, Some what defeats the object of the update in the first place

Agreed absolutely PC. Yes, it is fixable assuming one can get an updated driver from the manufacturer--which should be the case. I'd just be happier if MS was more informative about the brands and models where problems are likely to arise.

If you look for the DEVICE in HCL you more than likely find it is listed as
"works with Vista" not "compatible with Vista". Many folks were HIGHLY PISSED to say the least, when (per sample): Linksys and several other ROUTERS what works perfectly under Win2000 - Win XP and Vista RTM was killed with a "Reliability and compatibility update". THIS SUCKS IMHO...
several CD-DVD players have stopped working. plus other items...

Exclamation Works with is not the same as Compatible with

Apparently you have something 'device' that is not 100% Vista Compatible, installed in your system..it would really be nice if you can find which "update" killed "what device".

Now remember if you check HCL "http://winqual.microsoft.com/hcl/" against what ever DEVICE you have, if it is listed as 'works with vista' YOU always have the possibility that it will FAIL .. Only Compatible with Vista " is guaranteed to pass. Some times you can contact the manufacture and obtain a "firmware" or "Driver update" which in turn makes it compatible.

I'm sure prior to installing you did check the "I Agree" statement. Did you Read the Statement prior to clicking "I Agree"?

I guess you can download this update now by the looks of it on the MS site if you click on ( this compatibility update) it takes you to a knowledge base page with some info about the update and down the bottom it looks like the download or I may be wrong.
