I just bought this ACER laptop today http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...gon=&langid=EN

It seems the fan is always running though with that noticeable sound like it's working a lot, even when I'm just plain surfing the net. It only slows down to normal if I'm typing or do nothing. It makes me 'feel' as if I'm making it work too much but I'm not!

Is that 'normal' for Vista laptops? or else I'm thinking of returning it.

My Dell laptop fan has always run a lot, but about the same in XP and Vista. It's not loud--so no problem. I think the fans have been cranked up as laptops have become increasingly powerful in general. And, Vista definitely requires everything to work pretty hard no matter what one is doing. I am betting that you fan action is normal.

The fan running is normal, but when it revs up it's because it's getting really hot and it's trying to cool itself down. Many things can make a laptop to run hot, but there are some steps you can take. Placing a laptop on a soft surface, like a pillow, lap, bed, etc. can restrict the air flow, so it's much better to place it on a hard surface. My two daughters and I have one laptop each and we all use a cooler to rest the laptop on. It's inexpensive, about $14.00 dollars, but it disipate the heat away from the laptop using two fans that run from power from the USB port. Also I don't recommend running the cooler fans when on battery power, just resting the laptop on it will help keep it cooler.

But if the fan rev-ups continue, you might want to check with the manufacture. The reason been is that there could be an issue that may cause your system to fail somewhere down the road. Better safe, than having to pay for a new one.
