Especially for those who want to get Ultimate edition, but for others as well, you must be aware that some of Vista’s features may require additional hardware for your PC.

For TV Tuning = A TV tuner card and a remote control which complies with the Windows Vista Remote Control Specification are required for TV functionality and an optimal TV viewing experience. 1 GB of system memory is recommended for best Media Center performance. Applies to Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Ultimate.

BitLocker Drive Encryption = Requires an integrated Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 1.2 chip or USB 2.0 key. Applies to Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Vista Enterprise.

Tablet PC Features = These features require a PC which meets the Tablet PC specification that includes an electromagnetic digitizer pen. Applies Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Enterprise.

Felix, some tablet PC features (I haven't checked how many) do not require a tablet PC. The best example is the snipping tool

Under Win XP Tablet PC, there are a few applications where one can enter information using the electromagnetic pen, like the one that looks just like a white-lined paper tablet. I would like to see that included in Vista desktop version, even thought you wouldn't be able to write on it, it could be adapted to be used with the keyboard. When printed, it looks very informal and somewhat friendly.

The Snipping Tool is a carryover from Win XP Tablet PC as well, but is now available in all premium editions of Vista because it's so convenient. I used it as an aircraft inspector; we inspected the aircraft, annotated any discrepancies, then snipped part of the drawing that identified the location of the abnormality and sent it wirelessly to the repair section for action. Like the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.

I do wish you luck--expecially with the SATA(n)'s. They have bedeviled quite a few.

Originally, the Snipping Tool was one of the tablet components for sure, and originally you could open Tablet PC in Programs and Features to see what was included as I recall. Anyway, I am not so sure the Snipping Tool is part of Tablet PC anymore. It now may be installed automatically without choice--i.e., it no longer appears under Table PC in the start menu, and it does not appear that you can turn it on and off. I did not turn Table PC off to test my theory since it doesn't really matter that much.

The snipping tool is part of tablet PCs features. You can read about this and other features here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro.../tabletPC.mspx

I knew it would be installed on a Tablet. I was just saying that, on a "full-functioned" machine, it might not be part of the Tablet PC components since so many would like using the snipper, but would have no use for the rest of the components.

But, anyway, I tuned the Tablet PC components off, and the snipper went away. It's a handy device, but I am going to do away with it for a while. The images one gets are not nearly as good as those from doing a screenshot and then using Paint/Photoshop. Going this route will make me faster with Photoshop. It seems odd to me that the snipper would not be installed sans the rest of the Tablet components on a "full function" machine.

The problem is not really the drive, but drivers for the controller. Although it's, as you said, most current, the manufactures have been slow creating drivers that'll work with Vista. But I don't think you'll have any problems.
