Excited: Got Vista Firewall Outgoing Working

Hi Friends:

I am so excited. I actually got the Vista Firewall with Advanced Security working. My only real issue was getting it to block all outgoing except the things I wanted to allow. It seemed like doing so would be a simple matter. I tried it on my laptop and could never get it to allow the outbound I wanted to allow unless the site used encryption. Go figure. Anyway, I got bored and decided to try the same setup I tried on my laptop on my desktop, and it is working--although the firewall either has not yet blocked anything or has not given me the notification that it is supposed to if it does block something. Time will tell. But, hey, maybe my quest is over, at least on my desktop, for a Vista-ready outgoing blocking firewall (other than OneCare--which i don't want). Yeeehaaaa!

And, as soon as I set the firewall up and restarted, a "miracle" occurred. As of late, I have been feeling like I am using dial-up. It had gotten so bad that a Cox Cable tech is scheduled for in the morning. But, as soon as I restarted with the new firewall setup, my problem went away. We'll see if it stays gone. I am not counting my chickens yet, but, of course, I have restarted many times previously in trying to deal with my internet slow down. Hmmmm?

I am having one problem with the firewall and outgoing. It will block some programs trying to call home (generally providing notification), but not others. The most serious issue in this regard is that it only blocks one (the easiest to block) of the four leak tests I tried. So, I tried installing the wonderful Comodo free firewall again. This time I got it installed, but it did not work properly even in compatibility mode. This firewall is a super one, and, IMO, is easier to use than the Zone Alarm also free firewall. I can't believe that neither company yet has Vista-compatible firewalls.

Thanks much. LeakTest is one on the tests that I applied. The other three are the Leaktests available through Comodo.

Thanks Sean! That test rocks... and I got full stealth status! Did I expect anything less?

If you wouldn't mind sharing your reason(s) for not liking OneCare. I would be very interested.

I had an issue with the OneCare beta where by there was a memory leak... slowly but surely my RAM just filled up... ruined the performance of my system Otherwise would be a good product

I like the OneCare firewall very well. It passed the "Leaktest" outgoing test; I never tried it on the Comodo leak tests." But, I don't want the rest of the product. For one thing, most of its features are duplicates of what Vista already offers--e.g., defragmenting, disk cleaning, backing up, and defender. But, the worst part is that you can't turn defragmenting and disk cleaning off.

crabbster, do you have outgoing (firewall) protection? If so, did you try leaktest--as linked by Sean? And, I can give you a link to three more Leaktest-type testers if you are interested.

Any links you wish to post will be greatly appreciated! I have yet to find a test that even thinks my PC exists on the net
