| Also take a look http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/ptech/12/11/vista.security.ap/index.html also here is a quote I found on net: "new version of the popular Web browser Internet Explorer released in November and Microsoft's new Vista operating system will also attract hackers, Trend Micro said." I will drink to that but I think after about 5 years of IE7 it will only be half as bad as 6 if u get what I mean. PS check out my Xmas font. ? |

| The worst part is that hackers are no longer please with infecting a PC, now they want access to people's wallet or purse. MS has done a decent job with Win XP lately, but now hackers are going to try Vista. So far the phishing feature in IE7 has worked for me. I received an email from what was supposed to be Bank of America. Windows Live Mail warned me about the origin of the email, so that was the first catch. I went to the supposed Bank of America website (that's something you should no do, but I wanted to test IE7) and IE7 told me that it was in fact a phishing site. I contacted Bank of America and they asked for a copy of the email so they could turn it over to federal authorities.

| This from MS: "...Recently, Microsoft customers have become a target of this scam with false e-mails promising that you've won "The Microsoft Lottery." We're sorry to say that you did not win the Microsoft Lottery, because there is no Microsoft Lottery. These e-mails are intended to start a dialogue with people in order to convince them to hand over money or personal information or to click dangerous links on the Web." Got to this website for more info: http://blogs.msdn.com/securitytipsta...t-lottery.aspx

There is a new email that appears to come from the FBI. There is another that appears to come from a hit man that says if you pay him, he will cancel the contract on your life. There are many email scams. That is why a good spam blocker and user education is important. |

| I see Full version of "Windows Live OneCare" will be offered at $19.95 for 3 PC's I am interested, having had good results using Beta1.5 for a few months. I saw a forum comment that a free program "Advanced WindowsCare Personal" would do better security safeguarding in Vista than the Microsoft OneCare Live. I presently use only Avast, but when I buy my copy of Vista (soon) I want the best protection since I do a lot of downloading. I use a wireless router, which is a factor in blocking nasty stuff, no matter how many times you scan files etc. Any comments would be appreciated. ![]() |

| My comments are, thanks for the info. I haven't have any luck using "Windows Live OneCare". As a matter of fact, I uninstall it from my laptop day before yesterday because it made the laptop run very slow and when I shut the lid down, it would not place the PC on sleep mode most of the time. It would turned off the screen and the only way to get the laptop back was by removing the power...unplugging it and removing the battery. I just googled and found the program you just mentioned, "Advanced WindowsCare Personal". It appears to be a good choice, considering tha it's free. It doesn't offer all the benefits of Onecare, e.g.backup, firewall settings, etc., but has some excellent options. I'll give it a try. http://www.iobit.com/AdvancedWindowsCarePersonal/

| Just remember, there is no such thing as a completely safe network or computer. You just have to mitigate the risk as best you can. |

| Hi Jay: I finally got around to going to your website. Congratualations on a successful business for 20 years. Your mention of firewalls caught my attention. I am going to post "a" question about the Windows Vista firewall. Maybe you can help out.

| I have not been in business for myself for 20 years. Actually, 21 years ago someone I know asked if I wanted to work for them part time while I was in high school and they would teach me how to repair computers. I have done some sort of IT work during the past 20 years. Not all of it was paid. I spent 4 years in the military as a SIGINT analyst. I used to break codes and analyze all sorts of signal intercepts. I have worked as a paramedic and got a BSBA degree in finance and worked as a stock broker\insurance agent. I have worked many IT jobs along the way. A little over 3 years ago I decided to go off on my own and start an IT consulting business. It is the most fun I have had at work in a long time and love every minute (well, most of them at least) of it. What is your firewall question? |
