Hoping for excellent security

So far, it seems as though the security is amazingly tight. If it proves to be true, this could end a lot of hassles for a lot of people.

This is one area where Microsoft has never done a very good job and that is proactively dealing with security issues and problems. It seems like they routinely leave holes that are eventually exploited.

Security features should be optional, but unfortunately, this makes it optional to hackers as well they could turn them off and then exploit the system in other ways...

I am not sure optional is the right approach... Security features should be configurable but some aspects should not be optional - it is always necessary to strike a balance between annoying "innocent" users and protecting your system and users from malignant forces. Sometimes, the innocent users just have to be slightly annoyed for their own protection. In time they cease to notice it/even appreciate it

Seriously, MS should look at what they need to achieve in terms of basic, good practice, security precautions, and make these settings default and configurable by admins only, or perhaps in a few key cases, not configurable. In the longer term, people might respect them for it.

Look at it this way - they are the dominant (nearly monopoly) supplier of desktop operating systems for both personal and business use across most of the world. They can afford to do a bit of forced user education in security, as they have the power and opportunity to do some good with it.

At least that is how I see it.....

You can't make a system 100% secure. The other issue is the human factor. Security is as weak as the person using the system.
The other issue is that it's dangerous to create a false sense of security. A good example are FireFox users who think they can lean backwards without having to worry about any dangers.

I agree JDonner, people who just roam around without protecting themselves are just asking for trouble some times A few things people can do to stop problems are;

1. Have up-to-date AV software which proactively scans system changes.
2. Use antispyware and adware software, and scan on a weekly basis.
3. Close any ports which your network doesnt use.
4. Don't use dictionary words in passwords, instead use a random letter, number combo with CapItaLs thrown in.
5. Disable javascript when browsing the web and only enable when you need to.
6. Keep windows up-to-date.
7. Be vigilant! If something does feel right then it probably isn't

Crabby provided some excellent suggestions on how to be more secure when using any operating system, not just Vista. I may add the education part. Viruses have been around for a long time, but amazingly many people don’t do enough to protect their data. It only takes a little bit of reading or googling to learn how to protect a PC from viruses, hackers and especially ID theft. However, some people would rather ask for a fish, rather than go fishing for themselves.

This is worth reading; the worst part is that it'll never stop. http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/interne...eut/index.html
