I like AdAware as well -- I better wait until it gets into final form, this ole dog does not do well with Beta anything Znod

I'm a little confused about removing McAfee -- all I see in add/remove programs is McAfee Securit Center -- so I dont know if that includes it all.

Are you using software firewall? or the installed one? I guess the Vista firewall does protect against outgoing traffic but I am reading its a bit of deal to activate and set it up as it does not run in default. I may be off base in my thinking but to my mind if you got to worry about outgoing , I would think your computer has already been compromised . But what do I know.

I have tried different anti-virus application and I always end up going back yo Avast. I'm using the professional version, but the free home version has worked fine as well. As for firewall, I use Vista's firewall, which along with my gateway built-in firewall, protect my PC just fine. Except for opening the DMZ for my VOIP service, everything else is set to default...no issues at all.

I have also used AdAware and Spybot S&D for years and Norton but have switch to Symantec Corp AntiVirus and boy do I like the way it runs like its not even there, but once and a while you see it checking e-mail attachment, or some kind of adAware etc. Just can't wait for ZA Pro to be ready for Vista, but for now I am behind a Netgear NAt so that helps with Vista Advanced Firewall running in the background for security.

Removing McAfee Security Center should remove it all. The Windows firewall, along with a router firewall, should be excellent for battling incoming. Do you use a router? What brand? Model? The Windows firewall does a credible job on incoming by itself.

The Windows firewall is virtually impossible to configure to deal effectively with outgoing. No current firewall does a decent job on outgoing IMO. I would wait for Zone Alarm (free) or Comodo (free) before thinking of changing firewalls--especially in the context of outgoing. What you say about outgoing basically is true. So, as said, I would wait on thinking about a new firewall. Wait and see what some of us have to say when the new, good ones become available.

Thanks Znod - I am going to just lay back for awhile and see how it plays out. As for the router - lol,,, surely you jest . Announced myself early on, I am a neophyte - I ran by 72 years of age very quickly back in November of 06 Znod (lol). Anything I get into trouble with from that point forward I blame directly on my granddaughter who is a 2nd year graduate student in "computer science" -- although she is smart enough to start the problem - then run off to school. LOL

Seriously, I do sincerely appreciate the help and wisdom that this forum does give to the un- iformed such as I ---- believe me , others are not so kind.

Shoot, you are doing great. You definitely are not DuhBear. I thought I was the oldest--at 66. I will add you to our history as our oldest.

I feel about 19 mentally and about 30 physically. And, those are good things.

I was using Trend Micro IS '07 until I noticed that it did not have a "right click" scan. When I inquired about the lack of it to TM's support they told me that it was a "product limitation". So I started searching for another security suite. I have been reading how good Norton Internet Security '07 was on a security forum I frequent and decided to put aside my prejudices (I had a bad history with Norton) and downloaded the trialware.

I was at what I saw. This is definitely not the same sluggish Norton that came on my computer back in '04. Everything opens quickly, even the main window that pops up when you click on the icon in the systray. Back then this took 10-15 seconds and now it takes 2 at the most. This version has completely been written from scratch and does not slow down the computer nor use the resources it's predecessors had (I checked task manager and it's 5 processes used up a total of 7.2MB). It's firewall is more quiet than it used to be. It seemed like everytime I got online the '04 version was telling me that hackers were knocking on my door and I was on dial-up back then, lol. A look in the firewall's log tells me that it is doing it's job. I even did the uninstall test which was another thing about past Norton versions I didn't like, leaving traces everywhere on the computer afterwards. This one uninstalled neatly and I didn't have to spend hours in the registry like I did back in '04.

I have had one virus/malware popup warning since installation two weeks ago about a Downloader trojan that a website tried to install on my computer. Norton blocked it but after viewing the description of Downloader it wouldn't have mattered anyway because it affected all versions of Windows except Vista. I was so impressed with NIS '07 that I purchased it.

As of right now, the Vista version only has the AV/FW. I saw news yesterday that soon there will be add-on modules for anti-spam and parental control (that will be free of course). I really don't need those modules myself since my ISP uses Postini anti-spam and anything that slips through that Windows Mail filter usually catches it. Plus I don't have any "yung'ins" to worry about, lol.

For those who also have had bad experiences in the past with Norton, the next time you go looking for another AV at least try NIS '07 out. I swear it will surprise you as it did me who used to be a fervent Norton basher.

Norton has finally shaken off the "bloatware" label.

(Stay away from Norton 360 though, it does not have right click scan plus the other apps that are included with it are so-so from what I have read from user experiences)
