Security Susbtantially Upgraded in Vista

Sounds like Vista is going to be a big step up from XP in terms of security.

Quote:
After months of delay, the Windows Vista operating system will be introduced for corporate customers in November and for consumers in January.

Computer security professionals say Vista should enable Microsoft's customers to worry less about hacker attacks, although not worrying at all doesn't appear to be an option.

"I'm not saying there won't be any security flaws in Vista, but there will be fewer and they will be less severe," said Eric Schultze, chief security architect at Shavlik Technologies, a security software firm in Roseville, Minn, who has been testing Vista for months. "An attack that might have taken over your computer when you were using Windows 2000 or Windows XP might only crash your browser software in Vista."

Sounds good. security is such a huge issue right now. and XP requires so much extra stuff that the regular user probably wouldn't think of getting.

If you need top security for Windows Vista you may want to take a look at Third Brigade Deep Security, which now fully supports Windows Vista. http://www.thirdbrigade.com/

Security Update

According to Internet news there’s a security flaw affecting Windows 2000 SP4, Windows Server 2003 SP1, Windows XP SP1, Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista. According to initial reports, in order for the attack to occur, the hacker must first have to the PC. Microsoft has activated the emergency response process to investigate the issue.

Those are preliminary investigations by MS. So a word to the wise; be careful when opening email attachments or when downloading from the Internet. Better yet, save your data in an external HD or back up media.

i wouldnt worry, stuff like this happens all the time. Aslong as your clever enough to backup you should be fine the chances that you will get this virus are very low. On the ohter hand should we be seeing stuff like this in vista? i thought it was miles ahead of previous OS'es

I'm sorry, my mistake. What I meant to say was that in order for the attack to occur, the hacker must first have access to the PC. So it's preventable, but if you let your guard down, you could end up being a victim, even if you are using Vista. Two things that anyone should always do is activate the firewall and install and antivirus program. Also, follow the many advices posted here at VBabble.

Here's more info concerning Vista's vulnerability. Supposedly Russian programmers found a flaw that makes it possible to increase a user’s privileges on all MS operating systems, including Vista. As most of you know, increasing user's privilege will allow for software to be installed without any warnings in any PC.

There's also a flaw in IE7 as well that could allow the PC to become infected when the user is visiting a certain website. However, Firefox is not immune from attacks either. According to reports, Firefox has a few flaws that engineers are working to correct as well.
