Has anyone here ever been a victim of one of these vulnerabilities? I saw loads of vulnerabilities and such on windows XP and now Vista but ive never ever had anyone hack or mess my computer up.

Yes, I have seen some of what happens to some. The City Clerk 15 miles away, seen the Download-update info from MS in his EMAIL... and opened the file. This computer had all the town records, on it... lucky for him, I had told him some time ago... when things simply look "WEIRD or CRAZY" unplug the computer instantly... It only took a few hours to fix... every link from the Desktop was gone. Many Directories were missing, or renamed, many files had been compressed.. and re arranged... all the bank accounts, all accounting files, simply every file that a small town had was ready to be sent somewhere...
I told him unplug the Internet first... restart the system... and do a FORMAT of the HD... He then replaced his OS, set the Internet back, and reinstalled all files minus about 2 hrs... from his ON LINE Backup Server...

I also have seen computers that had been TOTALLY FORMATTED, due to not knowing UNPLUG and corruption is better than TOTAL LOSS.. many 3rd party programs can restore DELETED/FORMATTED files.

It is easy to BACKUP every day or nite with a simply click of the mouse using XCOPY or todays ROBOCOPY. WRITE YOUR BACKUP.BAT using word or notepad and click it any time and it is FAST and done.... unplug that external USB HD and it is SAFE...100%

Under XP, I almost became infected from some virus that tried to attack when I visited a very reputable website. At the time, I was using MacAfee; it stopped the virus. I thought I had the "about blank" thing once, but it went away or got eaten by something. I know that sounds dumb, but I did not fall for any of the "about blank" tricks, and I guess I shrugged the thing off.

You are welcome Snuffster. I guess many don't worry too much about the vulnerabilities--sort of like not worrying about getting into wrecks. I don't worry about such things. I just avoid risky places and keep my cloaking device turned on. And, whatever, I keep disk images ready to restore in 20-30 minutes. So, like Crazy George says, "bring em on."

Gads I'm glad someone else is a BACKUP NUT like me..
I have backups for my backups.. and password to protect my passwords..
might not be much but when you have over xxxK $$$ worth of other peoples
info you care for.. you need backups for backups.. and never more than 4 to 5 hours old...last estimate I had the average time to reconstruct 1 hrs normal business was 4h30m.

I had my own computer repair and backup storage service for 20 yrs... I backed up there stuff every nite...

I understand you felt need to back up back up. I have backed off from so much backing up because I quit protecting against fires. But, given normal circumstances, there is nothing better than a current disk image. My files are double backed up on an external drive.
