It changes the bit in the database for all threads from unread to read for your account. So, it is telling the database that you have already read all the posts in all the threads, so there should be nothing showing for New Posts for you.

I started this thread so I had better keep up with it. I also visit five other forums. If I do not check the option (it is usually prominent at the top of the postings) to "mark all forums as read" . Then the next time I visit, whether I have logged of or not is of no consequence, the same postings are there. This is convenient if I had not had time to read some of those which interested me. In this forum, if I leave the site, or log off, all the posts seem to be automaticall marked as read and cannot easily be found again on a subsequent visit.
As I said earlier, it is not a big issue and , as it seems to have raised some emotions, the site should be put back as it was a week ago.

I thought that is what I said above, but you said no to. Above, I intimated that "Mark as Read" is just meant to allow one to start again with a "clean slate." By starting with a clean slate I meant "there should be nothing showing for New Posts for you." I assume you mean the stars all would be gone too.

Why doesn't anyone talk about the returning stars phenom? Or did I miss the discussion? Does the software firm have a fix, I wonder?

I think I'm missing something here. I got everything back to how it was four or five days ago. Everything is fine on this side. I don't know what the returning stars is all about.

Let's say I read everything, and after enough clicking and reclicking of thread and topic links all the stars go away. Well, I may come back 10 minutes later and they and all or some of the stars are back--yes, on threads and topics where nothing has changed. I believe that crabby once acknowledged the same issue.

One guess...do you have automatic cookie deletion, perhaps? This particular option is based on cookies, so I'm guessing this might be your problem.

I block a lot of cookies, but I don't have automatic cookie deletion. If true that crabby has the problem too, then note that we do have one commonality that might be related. We both use "No Script" on Firefox. But, note also that this is the only site I have the problem on AFAIK.

Right now, when I look at "New Posts," there are correctly none I have not read/replied to. But, when I look at the screen showing the forums, I see ten stars. This scenario is just one more wrinkle on the stars come out, but often don't go out, and even go out and often come back later theme.

I'll check with the vbulletin support and see if I can come up with an answer. I personally have no idea.
