Run-On Threads

Hi All:

The issue of run-on threads (i.e., those that just go on and on and incorporate multiple topics with some even being discussed simultaneously) has come up several times. My suggestion is that these threads be closed with suggestions to start new threads to discuss the issues being discussed in them separately being made. I hardly even look at the run-on threads for sort of obvious reasons. I also think that some of us should begin suggesting that new topics be started when threads start to go astray or are hijacked.

For the most part, I think it's easier for the person who starts the thread to maintain the focus on the subject matter. It's not that simple though, as some people can't afford to keep watch on their threads every day. It would be nice to try to organize all post under a relevant thread, but that would be a huge commitment.

Once I have a larger staff, we'll be able to handle this a little better. If that darn contest would just finally end!

Felix is absolutely correct in his observation of "wandering" links. Maybe the moderators should be harder on posters who stray from the thread. These pages, like others around the web, give out a huge amount of useful info. On can quickly lose interest if the thread evolves from a complaint about s-ata drives into a discussion of the merits of different burner programs.

(P.S. And having read this after posting - I have wandered off the thread title!!!!!! I,m copying this over from "No more Windows updates" to the discussion on threads!)

I agree and also strongly disagree. This site is like YouTube.com free and easy going but with limits. However I don't think turning the site into some freaked out 24 hours a day moderated place will work.

"My suggestion is that these threads be closed with suggestions to start new threads"
Quoting Znod^

I think that many would fined there thread being closed without warning to be very rude also its down to the end user to think before they post.

No one suggested "turning the site into some freaked out 24 hours a day moderated place ...."

Why would the threads have to be closed without warning? And, closing them need not be done rudely whether or not they are closed abruptly.
Message now not too short.
