8GB in Vista 64bit

I just reinstalled Vista 64bit and cannot, for the life of me, remember which update makes Vista see my 8GB....or even start with more than 2GB.

Also if anyone could tell me how to make Windows NOT have to have the Vista DVD in the drive when booting/restarting I would be VERY freakin' happy

I've had the same problem last time I installed Vista, but since I have a poor memory from a head injury a while back, I don't remember what the update was.

Please help me

When i install or build a new system I usually only put one stick of ram in just in case there are any bad stick in a stack of 4 say sticks and after installing the system then put the other sticks of ram in the system. Why do you have to put the disc in every time you boot that is a setting in your bios i believe set to boot to the hard drive if that is what your talking about in the problem.

I am not aware of an update that makes Vista 64-bit see 8 GB. I have done very fews updates on my 8 GB 64-bit. But, installing SP1 should take care of the issue unless it is a mobo issue. I have heard of your second problem, but can't remember if there was an easy solution. You could try running the diagnostics from Vista boot pro. And, of course, you could try repairing startup.

Two seperate issues, both with definate solutions.

Please post your systems specs (especially your mobo model), your version of vista (including whether it is 32 or 64 bit) and we can sort them.

64 bit vista should be able to automatically see 8GB. If it doesn't it is usually because 'memory remapping' isn't enabled in the BIOS.

Have you done this?

Installing Vista SP1 did the trick. I somehow or for some reason hadn't finished installing SP1 and kept thinking I had, so there's the problem .... I installed SP1 and fully updated Vista, put in the last 6GB and it's working now.

I also had a problem with Vista not booting without the DVD in the drive.....but that was down to a setup error in BIOS, that had set the boot drive as my external HDD, which doesn't have Vista installed on it. Duh!
