Add / Remove Programs in Control Panel not showing Uninstall option

Hello there.

I have a HP Pavilion tx1000 Notebook with Windows Vista Home Premium running. All of a sudden the uninstall / repair option in Add or remove programs is not showing up for any programs except for the Google talk. When i click on any program - theres no option. Can anyone help with this please??

Winter.

This is usually a problem with the registry (if you have used a reg cleaner or installed something odd etc).

Therefore, a restore to a date before the problem started to occur, or a repair install would sort your issue.

Niether of the above will affect your documents but you will need to reinstall things.

Unhappy System Restore

Crabby,

I tried system restore for the first time (its been a month and a half now since i got this laptop) and I'm not sure how to restore the system to the day before yesterday. There's no option for that. Only option it shows is "Create" which ended up restoring the system to 15 minutes back! Do I have any other options??

Thanks
Winter.

There should be another spot to check that offers a different restore point.

If it does not offer another restore point then either you have NOT MADE A NEW RESTORE POINT or your cleaned all the old restore points.

The very first GUI (page) that shows after you click RESTORE (look at the bottom for the (choose a different restore point.) click it with your mouse.

PS: the name under control panel to uninstall is " Programs and Features" not Add/remove (XP). You are using Vista. ?

Yeah it is Programs and features, sorry about that. I'm using Vista Home Premium version. According to the help/tutorials, it says the restore points are created automatically everyday. But in my list there are only 2 points, one saying "Undo: Restore operation" and the one i created for restore. I did not do any restore points before (i had no clues about this ) - so i made that a couple of days back. Now that im having those two restore points, is it possible to create a restore point so that i could go back a week, now? I did not use registry cleaner or odd programs, but i installed and uninstalled few programs and windows update happened the same day.

Winter.

Unfortunately Vista cant travel back in time

HOWEVER! You still have the option of a repair install This will take the internal working of vista back to factory standard whilst keeping your files!

Just pop the vista disk in and choose to repair... done!

Hope it works.

Then apparently you have turned your RESTORE POINT feature OFF. Many (hack/tweak) sites recommend this, but It really is a bad practice. check the following settings.
1. start -> type "restore"
2. open "system restore" then look at the bottom and
3. click "open system protection" and insure that you have your MASTER BOOT Drive (C activated for restore protection and not TURNED OFF.

This is copy/paste from one of the highest rated Tuning Windows Vista Sites.

Quote:
3. Exclude some unused services
It’s a good idea to try disabling these services a little at a time. If you do not have a complete knowledge of you computer, you may need some of these. Alternatively, you may leave them all in, they will not impair too much on the resident memory.

1. Run services.msc via the Run command (Win key +R).
2. Stop the following services and change their start-up type to disabled

- Computer browser (if not connected to LAN)
- Fax (if not using printer and fax)
- Windows Error Reporting Service
- Secondary logon
- Tablet PC Input service
- Print spooler (if not using printer and fax)
- Windows time
- Media center receiver service (This caused some dysfunction on my computer)
- Security center
- Routing and remote access (if not connected to LAN)
- Internet connection sharing
- TCP/IP NetBios helper
- Server (if not sharing resources through LAN)
- Offline files
3. Close the services management console.

By taking these steps, you will ensure that your OS has less processes running in the background, so more memory can be dedicated to the programs you open, not the ones that are used by Windows itself, by default.

4. Disable system restore
1. Control panel- System and maintenance- System
2. Advanced system settings
3. System protection tab
4. Uncheck all the drives.
5. Apply changes.
These might make Vista Faster, but for those that not Computer GURU's there are some very dangerous tweaks.
The link is not displayed for reasons that I DO NOT AGREE WITH THE MAJOR OF THOSE "How to Tune Vista" Users be warned that some of the above mentioned Tweaks are QUITE DANGEROUS and NOT RECOMMENDED.

The Masterboot drive (C) is activated for restore protection (I turned it on a couple of days back - but still the list of restore points looks same (it shows only 2 points, one which i created manually and the other for UNDO) No restore points for 4th june is in the list (Which means if i want to restore my system to yesterday's status i can't?)

I recommend you read on when RESTORE does set a point.. If you do nothing at all install or upgrade then it sees no need to have a RESTORE Point.. and if you had RESTORE shut OFF. It does make a 1st RESTORE POINT when you turn it back on.... yes you can manually make a RESTORE POINT> recommended if your playing with testing new programs..

You manually turn System Restore off.• If you manually turn System Restore off on the system drive, all restore points are deleted, and you receive the following warning message:
You have chosen to turn off System Restore. If you continue, all existing restore points will be deleted, and you will not be able to track and undo changes to your computer.
Do you want to turn off System Restore?
Yes No
• If you manually turn System Restore off on any non-system drive, all restore points on that specific drive are deleted, and you receive the following warning message:
You have chosen to turn off System Restore on this drive. If you continue, you will not be able to track or undo harmful changes on this drive.
Do you want to turn off System Restore on this drive?
Yes No
When you turn System Restore on again on the system drive, it immediately creates a System Checkpoint. When you turn System Restore on again on a non-system drive, it does not immediately create a restore point on that drive, but monitoring resumes immediately on the drive.
Quote:
A restore point reaches an age of 90 days. The restore point is then deleted because 90 days is the default time to live.
• You manually reduce the data store size. This triggers the FIFO process to delete some restore points to accommodate the newly-resized data store.
Do not believe everything you read on (speciality web sites) here is the oldest I can remember.. start --> type cmd (when the little box opens) DO NOT DO THIS type "Format C: /y" then enter . in 1984 we tested this and had a response of over 85% ( WTF it formatted my HDD.)
