Exclamation AMD Athlon 64(tm) 3000+ Processor Capability??

Hey there i am back,

I have come to have a babble about the AMD Athlon 64(tm) 3000+ Processor on a Socket 754 Motherboard. Im experiencing a noise with this processor. It will make some weird noise. I cant describe how it sounds but the sound lasts a couple of seconds then goes away. a bit later on it will happen again. Im wondering if this processor is ok with Windows Vista?

Also i cleared all the dust out of the top of the heatsink the other day and fixed a issue with the fan. The dust on top of the processor Heatsink was like a dust sheet. The issue i had with the northbridge fan was making bad annoying noise so is what i did was sprayed some WD-40 on it and it seemed to do the trick.

Yes please let me know if this is compatible with Vista this "Processor"

Also what things lock up vista. I dont have a Dual Core machine only a single core. I dont understand these lockups though and was wondering if anyone has come across the real issue. I also notice alot of my memory gets eaten by certain processes such as firefox, virus appz etc.

I want to get on Windows Vista again today but i want to solve these issues first. Below is my computer specs.

AMD Athlon 64(tm) 3000+ Processor
nForce4 DDR: 8NPASLI/8NPAGLI Series Motherboard
2.01GB DDR Memory
300GB Hard Drive
160GB Secondary Hard Drive
ATI RADEON X800GT Graphics Card
1x External Freecom DVD/CD Rewriter
1x HP DVD Writer
1x Other CD ROM Drive
1x Floppy Drive

CPU-Z Information on my system can be found here..

The CPU doesn't have any moving parts, so the noise must be coming from a component that's in motion, like a cooling fan. I suspect that your heat sink is vibrating due to a problem with cooling fan...if you don't take care of that issue, it won't be long before it'll get worst. Your processor should work fine with Vista, but it needs efficient cooling; so does the other PC components. Also, there should be no air restriction through the computer. If the interior of your PC is or was dusty, then you should clean your whole PC, inside and out, not just a few components.

Your fans might be OK, but they might also be clogged with dust particles, which prevent them from working the way they should. I personally think that your PC just needs a professional cleaning job and it’ll work fine with XP or Vista. I recommend you take your PC to someone who is well experience; it could save you a lot of money on the long wrong.

There aren't really specific things, (you mean programs?) that lock up on Vista. Lock ups can be caused by overheating, so as Felix said there may be still a problem with air flow.
From what I can see there should be no problem with Vista on your hardware.I'm not as advanced as the rest of the members here but that I do know for sure.( I have been running it for a few months.)

I second Vistanoob, your pc is overheating. Like I mentioned on my first response, get it clean quickly or you might lose your CPU, RAM and maybe even the motherboard. Heat is the worst enemy for computer hardware. Also, you should have someone check the fans. The bearings can go bad and the fan may wobble; thus not providing the cooling air flow your components need. Again, I suggest taking the PC to someone who is knowledgeable; it might be money well spent.

i only built this machine last year and its done me a world of good so far. I was thinking of upgrading the motherboard / processor and memory as Socket 754 is no longer supported and is outdated. I have the Tower fan on the back which is a large fan. Northbridge fan and the heatsink fan aswell as the fan on the graphics card aswell as the fan on the side of the tower. It feels Kool when i touch the tower so i have a good chance it will not overheat?

My concern has to do with the dust accumulation you mentioned. Dust particles tend to stick to areas where the air flow is irregular. The fans may keep the computer case cool to the touch, but may not cool the components like RAM, CPU, HD, etc. efficiently enough.

WD-40 is a dust magnet... NEVER RECOMMENDED TO BE USED IN A COMPUTER... if you need a lub... make sure it is lite silicon lub which be purchased from any RADIO SHACK in the world..
1 drop can fix a erratic hi speed fan for up to 5 months or you also can use a ultra fine hi quality sewing machine oil.

I have found that many times the strange noise is due to the fan speed variance. which can be turned off. and make constant. I can not heard this difference but my wife can.. and it was very annoying to her...

Also AMD has a program called "AMD Cool'n'Quiet" which might also help.

PLEASE DO NOT USE WD-40
