Auto IP and DHCP

Yesterday my Vista desktop went into sleep mode while I was making coffee, when I came back and noticed the machine was 'off', I thought 'hmm... must have turned it off! So I pressed the power on button - didn't work so I just kept it pressed down thinking the machine had hung! Big NOOOO!

upon rebooting I couldn't get onto my home network. Seems my IP address had changed to autoconfigV4 169.254.xxx.xxx and is now called 'unidenfied network' - whereas my network range is 192.168.xxx.xxx - I checked my network card properties - to ensure it was configured to pick up the IP from the DHCP router. They were! but no network! So I changed them manually and rebooted - still no network - in fact the IP was still 169.264.xxx.xxx I checked my router, my other desktop settings and all was fine - but still no network! Thought, dig out the backup from last week - same problem still!

I checked the internet and came up with several potential fixes.

1. Switch off APIPA - this did not work for me
2. Registry fixes - various TCPIP entries - none worked
3. Different router - ahem... didn't work
4. Enter a static IP etc - nope
5. Updated the NIC drivers - none available for my onboard NIC
6. Checked firewall settings - what do you think?!
7. Turned off power save options on the NIC - did that, no joy!

Am confused, fed up and annoyed!!!

Anyone have any pointers?

My setup:
Asus P5N32E SLI Plus Motherboard
BFG Nvidia 8800GTX
4GB Ram - Corsair
Intel Dual Core 3800 Processor
System Drive - 200Gb Raptor
Data Drive - 750Gb Hitachi

Hmm... you've tried alot of stuff there... I notice you said there were no updated drivers... try reinstalling them? Or back dating to older drivers, then if that doesn't work updating them again?

You could also... try sleeping the computer again?

Um... I know these are vague, but you issue seems very specific
