can't get wireless access to work

A friend of mine has a new laptop running Vista. She was able to go online with no problems. No she can not. When she opens up the connection window it shows a red x between the house figure and the globe. Every time she runs the diagnose problem its says the connection is fine. What can she do to resolve this problem?

What does your diagnoses say exactly? Have you added a new computer to the wireless network recently? I did that to mine a little while ago and for some reason it made a second wireless network with a different security key then the one I was using. I wound up removing all the networks and making a new one. That worked for me. I was using a Linksys router and wireless chips.

Improve Wireless Connectivity in Vista

Quote:
Vista's new TCP/IP stack offers plenty of improvements, but unfortunately doesn't always play well with older hardware that isn't aware of the newer features it uses. Steve Riley on Security mentions that this can be a problem when trying to use wireless networking with a router that doesn't understand the updated 'Windows Tuning' feature. He suggests this is more common with routers used for public internet connections, such as at a hotel. The fix is to disable autotuning, which happens to be the same fix from tip 25 which dealt with threaded network applications.

Click on the Start menu and type cmd in the search box. Type CTR+SHIFT+ENTER to tell the command prompt to open with elevated privileges.

In the command prompt window, type netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disable and hit Enter

After getting the OK returned in the command prompt window, restart to activate the change.
If the change doesn't help, you can always revert by going though the same process, but instead, use the command:
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

Don't forget to reboot!
Found this in a TIP Section. Maybe it will help some with wireless problems.

Will the internet work again after she restarts it and tries to reconnect? I had a similar issue and I had to use the device manager to access the adapter and unclick the box that allows the adapter to turn itself off.

Unchecking that box is a good idea. You could also uninstall the network adapter in Device Manager and allow Vista to reinstall it on startup.

We tried that. We spent almost 2 hours with an HP tech and they had us completely remove the wireless network, unforunatly when we tried to acess it we could not because we were prompted for a password for the router. Any help on fixing this problem would be apreciated. She is considernin removing and installinf windows xp.

Almost every manufacture of routers have a default setting for login/pass on there web site... they also have a small button on the back that allows you to reset the router to DEFAULT ... therefore you can access it.

but first try login as Admin & NO Password = leave it blank

The manual also tells you how to reset the router and what the default log/pass is.

I would agree with snuffy... if you can get to the password login then the connection seems to be working fine... it might be that the router isn't connected.

Do you have another system attatched to this network?
