Sounds like a driver issue, try to find a vista version of your Mobo drivers.

I agree with Juggernaut, this does sound like a driver issue.

You mention that your PC shows 3Com 3CSOHO Fast Ethernet Adapter in XP and Intel R Pro/100 Adapter in vista...are you seen this through device manager; Computer > Properties > Device Manager? You can try going to the Internet (using XP) and download both Vista drivers; i.e. go to http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/downloadsindex.jsp and search for a Vista driver for the 3Com 3CSOHO and to http://www.intel.com/support/index.h...2_Support_Head for the Intel R Pro/100 Adapting the driver.

Download the software, create a folder on your desktop to place the decompress file during the setup. Select the Ethernet adapter from the device manager and choose update driver. Select the location where the decompress file was saved and try updating the driver. I would try the 3Com first since it's working on XP.

If you can find a Vista driver, get an XP driver and run it under Win XP SP2 compatibility mode.

You failed to answer many questions?
1. is this the same computer? if yes see ? #2
2. why are the adapters different?
3. do you have autofind/connect working in Vista. (XP does not have this).
If No have your ran "Diagnose and repair" on your network? (Vista Only)
4. Lan cable unplugged simply means that your router or what ever your xxxx to the internet is not working correctly... If I power off my NetLink Router it get the same notice.
