Cant stop vista running chkdsk

I told vista to run a chkdsk on my next reboot... so it did and all was good... but it wont stop it!! everytime i start vista it runs the chkdsk so i cant get into vista!!!! it starts up.. scans.. restarts.. scans.. restarts.. scans.. if i left it it would just keep going and going and going and going... what dose it think it is? energizer battery's!!?!

How can i stop it from doing this??

P.S. I can get into safe mode ok (I think...)

My generic answer to things I don't understand, but want to fix, is to reinstall Vista from within assuming that you are using a version that allows "upgrades." Crabby probably has a better idea.

lol ok...

Im guessing the fix for this (if there is one!) would be the same in xp as it is in vista... but not 100% sure on that one

First click Start> Run> bring up a command prompt by typing in "CMD" and type " fsutil dirty query d: ". This queries the drive, and more than likely it will tell you that it is dirty. Next, type "CHKNTFS /X D:". The X tells Windows to NOT check that particular drive on the next reboot. At this time, manually reboot your computer, it should not do a Chkdsk and take you directly to Windows.

Once Windows has fully loaded, bring up another CMD prompt and type and now you want to do a Chkdsk manually by typing "Chkdsk /f /r d:". This should take you through 5 stages of the scan and will unset that dirty bit. Finally, type "fsutil dirty query d:" and Windows will confirm that the dirty bit is not set on that drive.

chkdsk or dirty disk

If Vista is not on the HD in question.(since you dual boot) .. remove it-the HD... then boot. Vista or XP will continue to load. (That should stop the chkdsk..) then you can hook the HD back up.

You might start up with your Vista disk and then repair start up.
