Question CD/DVD Drive not being recognized

I have recently purchased a Toshiba Portege M400-S5032 running Vista. This is actually my second Portege, being that I had exchanged my original purchase which experienced the same problem. Once in a while the CD/DVD drive isn't recognized by the machine. It doesn't show up in the Computer window nor does it show up in the device manager window. I was originally told it was a glich in windows and that I needed to download a driver update. Then I was told it may be the hardware so I returned it. Now this new machine after functioning okay for a week, is experiencing the same problem. Has anyone experienced this problem and overcome it. The machine is great but not being able to insert CD's severely limits my productivity and personal enjoyment. I have some of my school's finest computer geeks trying to figure it out but they haven't solved the issue yet. Please tell me someone here can lead me to an answer. I have tried contacting tech support but Toshiba's outsourced tech support staff is inexperienced and pretty lackluster. For all that they could just upload the same script their "experts" follow to their website and have users go through the steps themselves.

Nonetheless, if anyone has any feedback it would be much appreciated. I have mid terms coming up soon and so being without a computer for two weeks is out of the question.

This is usualy an issue due to installation of third party drive software. Examples include incompatible burning and drive emulation software. I agree that support is usually quite lacking and so coming here is a great idea

I am afraid until I get more information I can't help too much. Therefore I ask if you would install belarc and post a report.

You can download it here: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

It is a useful tool that produces a report of everything on your system and so is an easy and comprhensive way to get all the information required.

Before posting the report make sure to remove any serials which belarc has gleened from your PC.

Once we have that report we should be able to sort you out

If you save the file as a text file it should be uploadable. An easy way to do this would be to copy and paste the report.

Remember to delete those pesky serial keys!

It should be here. I forgot to pay attention to accepted format. Let me know what's next. Thanx

Thanks, may I ask if you have ever used any of the toshiba software which appears to have come pre-installed?

To rectify your issue you first need to use windows restore to return to a time before the issue started happening.

Once you have done this, you should uninstall any CD/DVD burning software you have. I can't see any emulation software installed, but if you have anything like that I would suggest you remove that too.
