Hi Friends: I am very challenged in working with COM ports. I have two Vista cases where I cannot connect with devices and am told the that the needed port is otherwise occupied. Device Manager shows only my COM ports above 5. All of those above 5 show: Location: on Bluetooth RFCOMM from TOSHIBA. Where do I go, in Vista, to see completely how my COM ports are being utilized and to make any needed adjustments. Thanks in advance for any brief help you are willing to give. I have tried msinfo32.exe, but, while I thought I would find COM port info using this program, I could find none. I need a mystery solver.

| I was under the impression you could show devices by connection as well as list in device manager? What do you mean by COM ports above 5? And what type of ports are the problem? And are you dual booting... and if so do they work in xp? crabby |

| Hi crabman: My COM ports run from 1 to 40--with some numbers not represented. Historically, on my machine, it seems that non-BT devices would connect on ports 1 to 7. Now, everything from 6 up appear to be associated with BT. I am not dual booting. All that shows up in the device manager are 6 and up. So, I find no info on what's going on with 1 to 5. I have been unable to find any COM port display other than in Device Manager. Previously, I have bumped into COM port info being displayed elsewhere, but now I can't remember where. I'll go back to Device Manager to see if I can show devices by connection. Maybe I have been missing the obvious. I always was able to get things to work i XP and in 5384. Thanks much as always. EDIT: No luck; I checked out all the possible views in Device Manager and found no new info. ![]()

| OK... I have NO experience with bluetooth devices at all Have you tried the bluetooth device set up wizard? It allows you to choose a specific COM port to use with a specific device. crabby |

| Acutally, my BT (ports 6 and up) are working fine; it's 5 down that's the problem--where I would connect to com ports using USB. Hope it's clear now. Don't spend too much time crabby, although I know you like solving problems. It's nice to have someone to work with on these things. You have helped alot. Best, Z

| No all my USB's are fine. But, for example, what appears to be keeping me with syncing with my Pharos 525, via USB, is that the "COM port is being used by another device"--which makes no sense since there isn't another device.
